Kindergarten students from North Elementary School received a first-hand look at planting and caring for vegetables and fruit during their visit to a city garden last month.

The United Community Garden Project, a joint venture involving members of the local Master Gardeners group and Mountain Home Parks and Recreation department, started the garden last spring as a community service and education project.

"Interest in horticulture and learning the 'green way' has grown tremendously in the past few years as many people are eager to get back to the basics of life," said Kim Kovac, a spokesperson with the Master Gardeners. "Teaching people to grow their own food, designing new landscaping that conserves water and practicing safer, more organic pest control... are relevant to young and old alike."
