Commissioners approve key hurdle for townsite

Wednesday, June 8, 2011

On a split vote May 31, the Elmore County Board of Commissioners cleared the final hurdle that could pave the way to approving a major urban construction project in the county.

Last week's vote focused solely on the Mayfield Townsite Planned Community -- a 5,375 acre development that would add another 37,000 people to the county.

The commissioners spent less than nine hours during two separate meetings to deliberate the planned community application. It follows four additional days of public hearings before the three-person board last month.

Less than 20 people provided testimony during these public meetings with a majority either opposed or neutral on the issue. Many felt that more time was needed before the commissioners voted on the application.
