Seniors turned away from party

Wednesday, June 1, 2011

Dear editor:

The Senior Celebration left a bad taste in my mouth.

I thought that the reason for this function was to keep graduates safe and help keep them away from drinking. This function should not be so structured as to prevent a graduate from attending just because they did not get registered by the Friday preceding the event.

What of the student or family that could not afford to pay the required fee by the deadline, but would have the funds by graduation date? Were they also to be excluded?

I do not understand nor comprehend why a function of this type would turn away any student who just graduated. The "adult" leadership that put this together apparently has never heard of contingency plans.

During the years that I worked as a volunteer for the Senior Celebration, there was always a plan in place for last-minute attendees. No graduate was ever turned away.

The reason cited at the time that I took my grandson to the celebration and he was turned away was he was not cleared by Security Forces to be on base. I had just escorted him on base, and was told that because his name was not on the "list" he could not pay at the door and participate.

What a crock of "hooey." Just another excuse by power-hungry parents for not fulfilling the real reason for the Senior Celebration.

I will no longer support the Senior Celebration, even though I still have grandchildren attending schools in Mountain Home.

I feel that an apology is due to any graduating students who were turned away at the last minute.
