Perching peacocks perplexing public

Verna Weiss shot a photograph of these peafowl on her roof recently. Former pets that escaped to the wild, the range of the birds appears to be expanding through the city.

When Verna Weiss, who lives in the Bishop Court area of Northside Estates, spotted several peacocks on her roof, she quickly took a picture and then called the city animal control officers to see about having them captured and removed.

But Danniele Rhatigan, the animal shelter superintendent, said there was little she could do about it.

"We get about a dozen reports a year," of wild peacocks in Mountain Home, she said. "There's not really a lot I can do. Most of the calls I get about them are in the fall."
