County hears proposal on combined solar, wind facility

Friday, March 11, 2011

Four months after it approved a large-scale wind farm east of Mountain Home, the Elmore County planning and zoning commission recommended plans to build a smaller alternative energy project in the county.

During a public hearing March 2, the eight-person commission unanimously recommended passage of a combined wind and solar facility located off Canyon Creek Road about five miles north of town.

The project includes building six wind turbines, each capable of generating up to 2.5 megawatts of electricity. Meanwhile, a series of solar panels at the site would collect another five megawatts of power.

  • I thought I paid fairly close attention to most of these kinds of projects, but this is the first I've heard of this. Anyone know exactly where off Canyon Creek? There's already a lot of powerlines running through that area, and it would also seem fairly close to the Gateway West corridor.

  • This is also a Elk and Deer wintering area. Seems to me there is more room south and west of the freeway than to encroach on the mountains.

You can find the exact location by either going to the County and asking or looking for the minutes on Elmorecounty.org. The location makes sense from a logistical stand in that power lines are located close by. I am not for/against this project and understand both arguements.
