Women's History Banquet to honor six for sports

This display shows elements of the activities of women in sports in Elmore County.

The 11th Annual Women's History Banquet will be hosted by the Mountain Home Historical Society on Saturday, March 5, at the Elks Lodge in Mountain Home.

The evening social starts at 6 p.m. with dinner served at 7 p.m. It is a full dinner banquet with a no-host bar and a fundraiser for the museum. Tickets are on sale at the museum for $25 each.

The theme is "Women of Strength." The banquet will honor local women who have excelled in sportsmanship, team leadership and individual talent. They are female athletes, coaches and career women who have "shared their passion and support for sports from Mountain Home to around the world."

The 2011 Women's History Banquet honorees are:

Barbara Buchan--A track and field coach at Mountain Home High School from 1971-74, she received her bachelor's degree in athletic training/teaching from Boise State University in 1978. Barb switched from track and field to cycling following the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain. She earned a gold medal in cycling at the 2008 Paralympics Games in Beijing, China. She is currently competing in the Paralympics Games and is the director for Team USabled, a non-profit organization for disabled children.

Nikki Cruser-- A soccer coach for the last 16 seasons with Parks and Recreation, her teams strive to excel in sportsmanship. She serves as a coach and role model for young girls ages 4 to 12 years. She is the principal of Hacker Middle School in Mountain Home.

Erin Hicks -- A basketball star at the high school in 1998-2002, she went on to play basketball at Northwest College and for the University of Wyoming Cowgirls. In 2008, Erin received her Masters of Kinesiology and Sports Promotion from the U of W. She is an American College of Sports Medicine Personal Trainer and currently works with Muscular Dystrophy Association as the health care services coordinator and summer camp director for children with MD.

Sher Sellman--A former high school teacher (15 years), a financial planner (15 years) and a former councilwoman for the City of Mountain Home, she also served as a state representative for Elmore and Owyhee counties. She helped establish the second nine holes at the Desert Canyon Golf Course. Golfing is a love she shares with family and friends.

Angela Taylor--Basketball star at the high school from 1986-89, she went on to help win two national championships in women's basketball at Stanford University. She spent 14 years working in various capacities with the Women's National Basketball Association, including working with the WNBA League Office and Washington, D.C., Mystics. She currently is the owner and president of NetWorks Sports Consulting.

Joy Memmelaar -- A posthumous honoree, she was the softball and volleyball coach at the high school and won Coach of the Year honors in 1999 and 2000. Family, friends, teaching and coaching were key elements in Joy's life. "Her love for softball and the girls she coached left them with everlasting life skills," a banquet spokesperson said.
