Icy roads linked to interstate crash

Monday, December 20, 2010

Icy roads Sunday evening led to a serious, single-car accident near the Stage Stop on the interstate.

Quinton M. Qualm, 37, of Mesa, Ariz., was traveling westbound when he lost control on the slick roads at milepost 71 around 7:45 p.m.

His 2003 Chevrolet pickup went through the median, turned over on the driver's side and slid into the left lane of the east bound traffic before coming to a stop. The crash blocked the left lane for 90 minutes as emergency crews cleared the scene.

Qualm was taken by ambulance to St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise, where he remains in critical condition. The Idaho State Police report that Qualm was apparently wearing his seatbelt at the time of the accident.

Throughout Sunday evening, state police and local law enforcement agencies dealt with multiple slide offs and crashes. Due to the inclement weather and "very icy roads," the state police urged drivers to slow down and practice safe driving.

  • Odds are his truck was four wheel drive. People think that just because they have four wheel drive they can drive through anything. Especially out of state people who are from warm climates. You should never be in that big of hurry to put your life at risk like this fellow did. Its better to make it there, then to not make it at all. Merry Christmas to all!

  • Please be careful when you are judging others. I know Quinton. He may be from Mesa, but he has lived in Boise for years. He knows how to drive on the roads. He was on his way to see his kids and hit ice. He now has a broken neck, is critical, and only God knows if His kids will have him around for Christmas. Hitting ice does not require speed. I was going 10 mph the other day and nearly slid off the road. Judgments do not need to be made. Prayers, positive thoughts and kind words are whats needed for this family right now. Praying for you, Q!!

  • I'm allowed an opinion. I'm truly sorry for him and his family. I didn't base my whole opinion just on him. When I travel to Boise in the weather I see lots of out of town people just blowing by me like I'm not even moving. And It's people in general that think just because they have a four wheel drive vehicle that they can go 75 mph down the freeway on the ice. They can get up to speed faster than anyone but when it comes time to slowing down it doesn't help them out anymore than a front wheel drive minivan. Once again I'm sorry for him. And I apologize if I offended anyone else.

  • Oh and to add to my last post, you do need to be going pretty fast to start westbound, slide into the median, roll the vehicle and end up in the east bound lane. Too fast for snowy conditions. Thank you and sorry once again.
