Tiger wrestlers soar at season opener in Boise

The Mountain Home Tigers opened their wrestling season Thursday night at Skyview with a conference dual win, then went 3-3 at the two-day Buck's Bag Wrestling Tournament at Capital High School in Boise on Friday and Saturday.

The Tigers opened their dual conference season with an impressive 59-19 win over Skyview last Thursday night at Skyview.

The Tigers picked up seven pins, two forfeits and a technical fall on the night. Winning by pins were Devonte McClain (125 pounds), Charlie Shoemaker (140), Ryan Goldsby (145), Austin Clark (152), Justin Johnson (160), Sergio Guadarrama (171) and Jon Ryan (215).

Jared Cantrell (112) and Ty McRae (285) won by forfeit, and Cory Pinque won at 130 by technical fall (19-3).

Solomon Chung-Hee (189) lost by a minor decision, Jaime Ibarra (103) lost a major decision and Tyler Rios (135) and Austin Lisenbee (119) both lost by pins.

"It was a really good surprise how well we did against Skyview. It's a nice way to open up the season, and the kids got excited and we saw some good things that night," Coach Lynn Knudson said.

The Tigers went to Capital High School on Friday and Saturday for the Buck's Bag Tournament, going 3-3 in dual matches.

The Tigers opened Friday with a 39-36 win over Boise, lost to Capital 44-30 and dropped a 71-6 dual to Centennial. Saturday saw the Tigers fare much better despite missing six wrestlers -- two to school functions and four to injuries. They lost to Meridian, 42-31, but bounced back with wins over Eagle (43-40), and Wood River (42-36).

Cory Pinque finished 6-0 at the tournament in the 130 pound weight class.

Tyler Rios (135) and Sergio Guadarrama (171) both went 5-1, and Devonte McClain (125) and Ryan Goldsby (145) both went 4-2. Jaime Ibarra (103) and Austin Lisonbee (119) went 3-3. Charlie Shoemaker (140) and Jon Ryan (215) both went 1-2 the first day. Shoemaker had a school activity Saturday, and Ryan suffered a concussion and did not wrestle Saturday.

Austin Clark (152) went 1-5, Jared Cantrell (112) went 0-2 before breaking his collar bone, and Justin Johnson went 0-3 on Friday and had a school function on Saturday.
