City council approves new commercial complex

Wednesday, December 15, 2010

The city council approved plans Monday evening to build a new commercial complex north of Mountain Home.

Spanning more than two acres, the planned unit development at the intersection of Hot Creek Road and U.S. Highway 20 features a new Mongolian restaurant with space for additional office and retail businesses.

Originally approved by the city's planning and zoning commission during a public meeting Dec. 6, future development outlined in the plan calls for building a fast food restaurant along Hot Creek Road.

  • Goodness, could we try to lure in something like a Sonic....oh wait, that would put out Grindes because Sonic has way better ice cream and drinks. Or, how about a Taco Bell (not everyone has access to the base for Taco Bell)....oh wait, that would put out Taco Johns because in my opinion, I really don't know how folks can swallow that stuff. Or how about an Applebees....oh wait, that would most certainly put out AJ's (which in my opinion is long overdue)....I can make a Banquet meal at home that tastes better than the stuff AJ's serves, and Applebees always has a nice atmosphere and variety. A GOOD sit-down steak house or seafood restaurant would be a nice addition. Just my opinion....

From what I can tell on the plat map there isn't going to be enough parking for the amount of people this place will draw. Better get the council to ask for it's extortion payment up front.

    Moanah,

Hot Creek Rd is past AJs on the right. It is almost directly across from the wrecker business (I forget the name) as you head towards Pine/Featherville.

I have to wonder who the developer is? And has the P&Z council or the City council seen how many empty buildings there are already in town? At least this project is not going to displace any long established ones like the church expansion did.

So blame the church for expanding and needing the parking lot. Don't blame the city for not allowing them to use the existing parking as part of their plan. Unlike any businesses along the one way streets and one bar in particular on a side street, the church had to pay for those buildings that got knocked down to make a parking lot. The city even extorted $46,000 from the chruch so they could go ahead without all of the parking the city was demanding. The "long established" businesses were renting from the property owner. The owner decided it was better to sell than to hold onto building that were starting to shwo their age. The businesses relocated to other empty buildings along the main drag.

So tell me where the down side to all of this is? Old buildings get torn down, the church adds on and makes much needed improvements to it's own property and a few businesses moved into buildings along a busier route making the downtown a little nicer. I know what it is..it's PROGRESS.

    Mhbouncer,

So tell me where Hair Hut relocated to? I have looked and looked and could not find it.

In fact the owner had to close shop since all the empty buildings were out of her price range. Instead she is renting a space at another place so she can provide services to many of her elderly customers.

    Mhbouncer,

In fact I challenge you to let us all know where all the displaced business relocated to.

I am not sure but it seems to me the WECRD did not relocate "into buildings along a busier route" if anything they are farther from a main intersection now then they were before. I might suggest you check facts before you put them out there as gospel.

  • Hairhut had to close up shop, they could'nt afford rents other building owners wanted, all the stylists are renting space with other salons, very sad. How odd to put new business way out past AJ's, I'm with OldGuy, how about filling up some of the empty retail spaces already downtown, like the old Salvation Army building for one.

  • Awesome point made by "mhbouncer"...enough already about the poor business owners downtown...what downtown for goodness sake. Walmart took care of that years ago...however, you can make downtown viable, buy having little shops and cleaning up the area with a littl urban development projects, like new parks and lights, planting trees and flowers...the Catholic church addition will add a lot to the overall apperance...but as far as business goes, they have to be the right business to attrack shoppers..but the city has to do something to make downtown more appealing, instead of dirty and run-down...

Let's face it, you either embrace new business and growth by the freeway or get left behind...it makes much more sense to build there then try to keep protecting the mom and pop business that are doomed!

Downtown can be a nice little place to spend the afternoon..IF the city plans smartly and has a "theme" for the downtown area.
