UPDATE: Suspicious package prompted post office evacuation

Tuesday, December 14, 2010
A city police officer examines a suspicious package reported at the Mountain Home Post Office on Tuesday.

A suspicious package later identified as a box of clothing prompted the evacuation of the Mountain Home Post Office around 4:20 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.

As a precaution, local law enforcement officers established a two-block cordon around the building for approximately 30 minutes until the area was declared safe.

According to sources at the scene, a customer identified a large package left in the post office lobby for approximately an hour, which initiated the evacuation.

While the box lacked a forwarding and return address, it didn't feature any additional characteristics that would raise a significant alarm, according to post office officials. However, it was large enough to require an evacuation as a precaution.

After postal employees made the initial call to county dispatchers, the box was moved to a loading dock behind the facility, according to Police Sgt. Rick Viola, a spokesman with the city police department. It's not known who moved the box or why they chose to move it.

By 5 p.m., emergency responders located the owner of the box, who confirmed it was their property. The package was then opened to verify the contents, which was limited to clothing, according to Viola.

While the incident turned out uneventful, it emphasized the importance of identifying suspicious items or activity and taking steps to alert the proper authorities, the police spokesman said.

  • Well that's the result of the Dept of Homeland Security agreement with Wal-Mart...(and I am not making this up) "If You See Something, Say Something" that is displayed on monitors in Wal-Mart...why don't they use the x-rays at the airport to screen our mail...dang....don't let anyone know I suggested that...we'll all have to go through security before sending/receiving our mail...

We listened to this on the scanner. I have to ask a few questions... (1) why would you leave a package on the loading dock at the post office and (2) why did it take about an hour for someone to report it?

I do have to give a huge thanks to all those that responded to this situation. They seemed to respond in a organizied manner and did so promptly. I feel safe if these same people had to respond to similiar instance.

  • Old guy, the article says the package was in the lobby, the P.O is always busy, someone probably set it down and forgot it. Happens all the time this time of year, tis the season for Christmas packages.

    Monah,

And the reports on the scanner were on the loading dock area. Not sure why the difference but that is the information we heard and hence my comment. In addition the picture shows it on the loading dock. Maybe the paper can clarify this.

    Response by Brenda Fincher:
It was originally discovered in the lobby and moved to the dock as part of the investigation.
  • You are right Moanah! Let's bring Saudi here and then wonder how many of these calls will be made
