County planning commission OKs wind farm proposal

Thursday, November 18, 2010

The number of alternative energy facilities in Elmore County may jump next year after a request to build several more wind farms gained initial approval by the county's planning and zoning commission Nov. 3.

During the recent meeting, the commission recommended passage of six conditional use permits to construct up to 55 wind turbines near a group of 10 existing towers north of Hammett.

The commission also approved a separate conditional use permit to build an substation facility to tie these generators into Idaho Power's electrical grid.

I agree, this can only improve our state and area. Thank you for moving in the right direction.

  • Yes! and maybe some real jobs as well? We need to be a little less (solely) reliant on the base, as wonderful as they are, and our neighboring towns really need help with jobs. Hopefully this is the start of a stronger, more diverse economy.

As I drove down to Texas, I noticed all of the wind turbines in every state I went through. I wondered why is it such a challenge for our great state, with the wind resource we have, to get this program off the ground. As I see it we are woe-fully behind the rest and this plan can only lead to better ideas. I propose both schools (JHS/HS) use this chance to build wind turbines to help off set the cost of electricity and route the money saved back into the schools. The project could be science/resource driven and if it works out, have the elemetry schools follow suit. Just my two cents of savings....

  • What's the point of building them if they don't use them. The one's they already have by Hammett are NEVER in use. Something to do with Idaho Power.
