Award-winning vegetable nets 'cabbage' for student

Koby Kunsky won a $1,000 savings bond for his award-winning cabbage.

One boy's dream of growing an award-winning vegetable yielded him a whole lot of cabbage -- in a manner of speaking.

Koby Kunsky, a student at North Elementary School, earned a $1,000 savings bond through the National Bonnie Plants Cabbage Program.

Each year, the company hands out more than 1.5 million cabbage plants to third graders across the Untied States with one winner selected in each of the 45 competing states.

"If nurtured and cared for, cabbages can grow bigger than a basketball and tip the scales at nearly 40 pounds," said Joan Casanova, a program spokesperson.

Koby remembers the day he received his award-winning plant.

"It started as just a little plant in the spring; it was just a little guy," he said, using his fingers to illustrate.
