Expense study drains WECRD's pool proposal

Wednesday, September 29, 2010

After the heady positive response from an earlier revenue projections survey, a Community Leadership Development Committee study of expenses has taken some of the wind out of the sails of the Western Elmore County Recreation District's bid to build a community center with a swimming pool.

The CLDC will recommend to the WECRD at tonight's rec district board meeting that it be given until the end of March to conduct a feasibility study to determine if it is possible to raise the revenue needed to build the center with a pool.

The CLDC operates under the umbrella of the Treasure Valley YMCA, which is under contract with the rec district to examine various options for constructing a community center and bringing Y programs to the area. It is expected that, if built, the Y would actually run the facility, bringing its family-oriented slate of programs with it.

  • Why doesn't the wecrd ask the city what running their pool for the summer costs them??? Because they don't want it published that even the city cannot make a profit on the pool between maintenance, chemicals, and paying the lifeguards. The sad part is the pool is usally busy day in day out with the open swim, lessons and then the parties. Even if the pool was to double what it costs to get in they probably wouldn't clear a profit, and I could only imagine the rage of the citezens at the price hike! The wecrd wants to have a indoor pool?? The maintenance alone just on the structure is expensive due to the chemical exposure. The study that was released shows what they expect out of the people that voted yes to actually join... Get ready Mtn. Home, your tax dollars are going to be supporting this money pit for along time to come, and wait untill they start doing memberships based on income...

This has been posted several times before, it costs the City $1000 a day to operate the City pool and that information has been provided to the WECRD board with the receipes to show what it costs. The WECRD seems to think they can do an indoor pool cheaper but they haven't looked at what all is involved on an indoor pool. You are so very right taxes are going to go up to support this elephant of a mess that has been in the works for 8 to 10 years and still nothing to show for it. Now comes another survey to see how they can raise 3.0 to 4.5 million dollars to have the pool like anyone here can afford that.

So we have to wait 5 more months for some group, that has not polled all voters in the WECRD, to come to a conclusion as to what we want? I can save them the time and effort, I vote no if the community center is to have a pool.

  • Good Lord! It sure will be possible to be built with HIGHER TAXES!!! We have got to get rid of this disaster, my well has run dry. I almost qualify for Food Stamps as it is with my budget, one more hike in my payments, I will be forced to sell my home. I will not take away from my kids to pay for SOME with higher incomes to have a fancy pool!

  • Comes down to one single question. Why does a town of this size need TWO Pools? It should have stopped there. There's even another pool on the base for all the military personnel.

  • It is sad to me to see this go the way of everything else that is proposed in Mountain Home.

We have nothing for our youth. The retired Air Force impact is huge. "They have a pool". They also have everything else they need at the base so to heck with taxes and anything that the community needs.

As for the City pool. It is great for summer and for all of the kids that don't mind being out in the sun and swimming practically on top of each other.

I wish that, instead of negativity, that we could figure out how to make this work.

  • I am not used to doing this and I was looking for my message at the bottom. So - excuse me for stuttering.

  • Why not improve upon what we have as opposed to building new and giving the green light to more taxes?

How about improve the pool we already have and cover it. Certainly that would be less expensive than the Taj that is being proposed. People have done research on all of this and the WECRD still wants BIG and NEW. Great desires for those 3 gals considering the economy and the state of Elmore County and the rest of this world right now.

We have a pretty great P & R program for a community our size. There are other programs as well that are pretty great. We also have 4-H and Optimist as well.

Why not try to improve what is already out there and maybe build some new programs from that? Why not be happy with what we have, improve upon what we have and build from there? These are tough times for some and the last thing most of us need are more taxes for a facility that will never make a profit or sustain itself without yearly tax increases (speaking in terms of the 3, current proposed plans).

I wish more people would attend the WECRD Board Meetings and see for themselves how the public is treated and how those meetings are run. Until you have attended at least 3, you have no clue what is going on. Facts should not be viewed as negativity---the situation is what it is.

    $725.00 on photos of themselves?

$30,000-$60,000 for a report that has already been done to show that millions cannot be raised in this community?

Think about how much recreation these people have flushed directly down the toilet that could have HELPED kids and local programs. Instead, we waste it on data we already have. FLUSH!!! Nice job Mark Hiddleston but then again you stand to make some money off the project if a facility is built according to those appropriations applications, etc.

    OM,

I agree totally, and I seem to be missing the meetings. We need to work on what we have and stop dumping money into a pipe dream, one that was not feasible then and definately isnt now. I like the current city pool and I agree it would be less expensive to enclose it than build the grand dipping center. The monies youve shown would more than likely cover the pool, but we need more photos and more surveys, there hasnt been enough. Yniashi, your right, the youth here needs something as do the adults, but look at how much has been wasted so far, and it HAS been wasted. That money could have gone to the youth for all sorts of programs and needs. The board felt different, b/c they demand their pipe work project, nothing less. And as OM stated, the current state of the economy just cant support the pipe dream they want, so they can either yeald and work with what they can or go away and leafve us taxpayers be.
