Mayne, Nelson to challenge incumbents for WECRD seats

Thursday, September 16, 2010
Judy Mayne challenges board president Marsha Sellers in the District 1 race during the Nov. 2 elections while Art Nelson takes on Jana Borgholthaus for its District 2 seat.

Two Mountain Home residents filed their paperwork two weeks ago to run for one of two seats on the Western Elmore County Recreation District board of directors.

Judy Mayne challenges board president Marsha Sellers in the District 1 race during the Nov. 2 elections while Art Nelson takes on Jana Borgholthaus for its District 2 seat.

The recreation district selected Sellers to fill the board vacancy following the resignation of Dee Pate in April 2009, who left due to health concerns. Borgholthaus joined the board after Doug Belt resigned in November 2008, leaving Mollie Marsh as the board's only original elected representative.

  • Thank goodness! This will be the second election for this board in 10 years. The "appointments" and meeting law violations may now come to an end. Good luck you 2! You have both been involved enough and sure know the documents and the issues. Will there be a debate?

  • FINALLY!!! And I agree with OM. And there is no question - there should be a debate. In the evening when everyone can attend.

  • Fresh faces and opinions are always a welcome addition to any political scene. These two need to remember that, as elected officials, they are to advocate for the public that elects them and they must act as their voice. The public has spoken through their original vote...so, rather than planning to push for their own agenda, these two should either re-evaluate their stance, silence their opinion that differs from the majority vote or prepare to be disappointed. Running for office for the sole purpose of being in a position to promote a self agenda is an insult to our democracy and every participating voter in the area.

  • ConsiderThis,

Do you even read what you write? They shouldn't have a different opinion from what was voted on ten years ago? Do you think that ten years ago the folks who voted thought that ten years later they would still be years away from nothing? Thats what elections are about. They both seem to have a plan for getting some recreation out of the money that we have been taxed over the last decade.

With the CLDC's two great plans of floating a bond for 1.6 million for option 1 or a bond for 6.5 million for options 3 with a pool, while also raising taxes 3% every year for the foreseeable future, so that by their own numbers a tenth of the taxed people are blessed enough to be allowed to pay a thousand dollars a year to enter a facility that will kill businesses that supply the same thing now, a majority might think that it's time for a change of direction. Is it possible, oh wise politico, that democracy has been thwarted thus far through the appointing of dogmatic fantasy chasers versus some balance of power on the board? I may be way off here but mayhap, oh mighty sage, it's time to have these two positions actually elected rather than appointed by the like minded zealots that continue to talk about saving the children while ignoring the children that have gone by the wayside over the last ten years and who knows how many more children over the next years. But the great thing is that threats like yours of staying with the same ol same, WILL be settled at the ballot box. The people that are fed up with taxation for nothing and an increase in taxes of three percent per year, and survey after survey after survey and still no recreation finally have a chance to do something about it. Vote the bums out.

  • ConsiderThis:

Wow! You are going to lecture these 2 people on being the voice of the people and not pushing their own agenda! Really.

That is what the WECRD has been ALL about for over 10 years now. And Atomic Dog is 100% correct in what he/she states. Are you ready for your taxes to go up for a 10 million dollar facility? We have paid to consult with the YMCA and we are right in the same spot they are. We have around 2 million saved. To build the pool(s) there will have to be a bond. Is it worth a tax increase of AT LEAST $215.00 per year for you (based on a current tax rate of $80.00)? That is right where we are headed. Then, you will pay nearly $1,000 per year to join. N-JOY!!!

  • Hmmmm. Will the WECRD Board spend another $725.00 of taxpayer money on photos or will they use the ones they already have? Talk about agendas.
