Penny wall seeks to draw tourists

Friday, August 27, 2010

Randy Miller wants to create a tourist attraction for Mountain Home by creating a wall of pennies and nickels on the alley side of Kurly's.

Miller, of Think-Q Painting, is setting up small buckets at a number of local merchants asking people to donate their pennies and nickels to the project. He plans on gluing the coins to the 45x16-foot wall in the hopes that it will draw tourists and locals into the downtown area.

  • Like I don't have anything better to do with my money?

  • *

The government is always saying there is a shortage of pennies and it cost more to make a penny than its worth. Maybe a nice stunt but like maybeso said I think it is illegal to do that with currency.

  • I've got a better idea for a tourist attraction. Do something during the winter inversions and when we have winds from the south from blowing Simplot's Grandview feed lot smell into Mountain Home. We'd all benefit from that, maybe even get EPA funding.

  • I agree with both mtnhomemama and Reserve ID, Hmmmm Pennies stuck to a wall outside a bar I wonder how many will be left after the first friday night they are there?

  • I'm trying to bring something interesting to Mtn. Home, to get people to shop local and help Mtn. Home grow. I'm getting a lot of good feed back on this project. I want something in this town that we can show to visitors and be proud of. Or you can just say "We have Walmart".

I want to see more art in this town. I am not going to deface or destroy any of the pennies, I am just going to produce a work of art out of them.

  • I don't know the person who plans to make this wall, I will say though, that those of you picking it to pieces, have not suggested anything better. Why not be happy that someone wants to do something good instead of knock it down and then not offer anything other than negative feedback as an alternative?

  • You can do with your building what you want with it. I was just pointing out the fact that there are laws in place.

I am just curious, does your marketing plan have an estimate on how many people are coming to see your penny & nickel wall?

You want ideas and input ~ have you contacted the Commission of the Arts to see what ideas they could offer for the wall or maybe the local high school art classes, or a BSU Marketing class to see if they can offer a marketing suggestions for the area.

  • Isn't that like defacing money? And also slightly illegal? In these economic times times are tough and people are pinching pennies so who's gonna want to donate pennies for a wall when they can be used to try to pay for the next water increase or for the school levy that passed. You want a penny on the wall well paint a picture of one and let the art class at the high school do it for a project.

  • This is Randy Miller from ThinkQ Painting

I have 47 local businesses now that have penny jars. They all want to help me out with this project. So go to the stores and donate your money and shop local.

    Thank you

  • I'm just sayin...

Look at what the Drunks have done to my daughters painting on the electrical box. If you're going to do somthing nice, you had better protect it from the local vandals.

  • All the public murals I've done. Not one has been tag. Knock on wood.

-- Posted by ThinkQ on Sat, Aug 28, 2010, at 5:38 PM
  • First, I'm pretty sure that's illegal. Second, if I'm wrong about the first, there has to be a better wall than the side of a bar in an alley. That is a place most people try to avoid. I think it's wonderful you want to add interest to our town, but I'm afraid Reserve ID is right, those will get picked off real quick!

  • Sorry I'm not giving up. If you had a second chances in life or a do over. What would you do? Sit around and watch the world go by or doing something that is fun with your life. I want to see what I can do before I go.

Plus I love helping people out in my special way.

  • I think this is a great idea for Mtn Home, but I also think that people will vandalize the wall despite all of the hard work that will be put into this project.

  • @ all:

I agree with "itsJustMeAgain." What a bunch of negitive ninnies. Seriously...someone tries something in MH and you all start griping about anything negitive you can find. "I've got a better idea..." I think NOT. Even if you have an idea at all, Randy is actually doing something about his idea, not just throwing up ideas.

@ Randy, i.e. "ThinkQ" ~ Sounds like a fun idea! I've seen these pieces of art around the country, and they are quite an attraction; in fact, yours could be the largest ever...have you looked into that? A World Record would definately attract people, and a piece of Art brightens up any spot, including an allyway next to a fun and popular bar/eatery.

I'll be dropping my loose change in your jars.

  • How much notice will it get there facing an alley?

Why not do it somewhere else where you can see it as your walking or driving by?

I know put them on the front of Wal Mart thats where most of our money goes lol !

  • Have you walked around town and looked at other business's where it might get more attention?

I think it's a fun idea, however what my opinion is worth, I think you could find a better location and if you can get the business to go along with you

-- Posted by MsMarylin on Mon, Aug 30, 2010, at 1:56 PM
  • I'm targeting small businesses and downtown. If you look at all the businesses on my map. There are no Franchise on the list. ( Walmart, Banks, Government, Pizza hut, etc.. They all have to look the same. ( BORING ) I'm trying to keep the mom and pop store open.

Yes there are some franchise that are helping me because I've done a lot of business for them and they know me.

Plus There is only a few people that own their building and work in that building. Kurly's Bar is one.

  • Randy, Go for it man. Dont listen to the opposition! No matter what anyone does that is different you are going to hear a bunch of whiners complain. I think its great!

  • How about we donate all of those pennies to a food bank or shelter? That would be a good use of the money.
