UPDATE: Services set for Airman killed in Las Vegas
Memorial services for a Mountain Home Air Force Base sergeant killed this past weekend begin at 9 a.m. Thursday at the base.
A viewing for Tech. Sgt. Jason Leigh, 32, runs from 9 to 10 a.m. at the Liberty Chapel on base with his funeral following at 10:30 a.m. in Hangar 1333.
Grave side services start at 3 p.m. at the Idaho Veterans Cemetery in Boise.
Leigh died Saturday when the motorcycle he was riding was hit by an elderly driver traveling south on northbound U.S. 95 shortly after 10 a.m. close to the Decatur Boulevard turnoff, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.
Another airman riding his motorcycle with Sergeant Leigh sustained injuries in the same incident. Tech. Sgt. Jason Owens, 38, broke his collarbone and bruised his knee when he fell off his bike after colliding with Leigh's motorcycle. The sergeant, assigned to the 366th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron at Mountain Home AFB, was transported to University Medical Center in Las Vegas and released the same day.
A third airman riding with the group, Staff Sgt. Darren Brown, 25, was not injured. Brown is assigned to the 366th EMS at the Air Force base.
The three sergeants were part of a group of airmen from the base on a temporary duty assignment at Nellis Air Force Base, Nev. All three motorcyclists were wearing their helmets and proper safety gear.
Alcohol did not seem to be a factor, and the elderly driver may have "just been confused," according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.
Leigh served as a repair and reclamation craftsman with the the 366th Equipment Maintenance Squadron at the base.
"This tragic event will undoubtedly affect us all," said Lt. Col. Donald Supon, 366th EMS commander. "Krista and I share deeply in this loss and our hearts go out to Sergeant Leigh's family and to all of us who need to grieve for this most unexpected loss."
The crash remains under investigation by the Nevada Highway Patrol.
