Man arrested following armed robbery of individual

Tuesday, March 16, 2010

Mountain Home Police arrested a man Tuesday morning they believe was involved in an armed robbery of a Mountain Home man in front of the Sunset "C" on Sunset Strip.

At a approximately 2:40 a.m. Tuesday morning, an officer with the Mountain Home Police Department was flagged down by an individual near Albertsons who stated that he had just been robbed at gunpoint in front of the Sunset "C."

The suspect apparently did not brandish a weapon, but showed the handle of something the victim assumed was a gun, and said "I don't want to use this."

Michael Cyr of Boise was taken into custody without incident Tuesday morning. He faces charges of armed robbery.

The victim provided a description of the suspect and said that the suspect was driving a beige- or tan-colored vehicle.

At around 3:16 a.m. an officer with the Mountain Home Police Department made a traffic stop in the Wal-Mart Parking lot on a vehicle fitting the description provided. The suspect was taken into custody without incident and was later identified as James Michael Cyr, 36, of Boise.

A gun was not located in the traffic stop. However, a knife was recovered that is believed to have been used in the robbery.

Cyr had been paroled in May of 2009 following conviction in 1999 on an armed robbery charge to which he had originally been sentenced to 25 years in prison. He had violated his parole in October 2009 and had a warrant for his arrest in connection with that violation. He is currently being held in the Elmore County Detention Center.

  • Ok, let see another case of my CWP coming in handy, talk about the wanted parolee bringing a knife to a gun fight. If a few of these idiots are killed then maybe the others would think twice before mugging someone. But hey let's just be fish in a barrel for criminals they like it that way. Yet another Boise criminal flees to Mountain Home to get caught by our outstanding officers, just surprised he didn't try to run.

  • Sounds like MHPD did a good job. I am first in line to speak out when they mess up. Guess I should be as loud when they do something good. Good job MHPD.

So where were all you gun carrying nuts when your fellow citizens are being robbed? I thought you'd be out in force to prove that guns prevent crime? I guess your swagger gives out when it gets too late or too early, or the middle of the day? Come to think of it, I'm not sure I've heard about you CWP types actually preventing a crime in Mtn. Home. Is your gun just somekind of weird status symbol? Only to be used as a prop to elevate your lack of maculinity......

  • censored - the reason you don't see anybody with a CWP in the paper protecting anyone is because people with CWP's don't announce it. A CWP doesn't make you a billy bad @$$ or a law enforcement officer...however, had this gentleman had his OWN CWP the story would have read much different.

It's not about swaggering around scaring people or warning them that you have a gun.... It's about knowing that had this guy walked up to me and said 'I don't want to use this' I coulda said 'ditto buddy'.

Would I brandish my weapon to protect my fellow citizen? You betcha...would I put myself out in front of the Sunset to protect him in the first place? Not purposely...I don't go looking for trouble but if it finds me, I'm protected!!

  • Thank you MHPD for catching this guy so quickly. I have to agree with Retirmentcanbefun that if more of these people are dealt with more harshly it might deter the others that are thinking of commiting the same kind of crimes. First Pauls and now Sunset C, all in the same week, has pushed me to carry my weapon everywhere I go. Whereas before, it was only if I went to the mountains, or somewhere out of my element. Very sad I feel the need to do this since I have lived in Mountain Home forever and used to leave my door unlocked, my car running with my purse in it, my kids out front playing by themselves, without ever worrying about these kind of things happening in our town.

  • Censored-if I had known the time and place of the robbery, you can bet your bottom dollar, I would of been there to lend a helping hand to my neighbor. But your comments have left me with the opinion that you do not approve of guns. So if you can let me know your name, address, and info, I will make sure if I see you being robbed, or some shady character hanging around your place, that I do not intervene on your behalf. You further called people that carry guns a nut, come now, is that best you can do? Furthermore, you also made the comment "Only to be used as a prop to elevate your lack of maculinity......" So I guess that a 110 pd. female does not carry a gun? That we would not have a CWP like our male counterparts? I hope that crimminals think the same way when they see me....what a surprise they will have.

    Have a great day.

And not only do women carry guns, the gun makers make them light and cute with pink grips too. Censored is an idiot. The guy robbed was walking along the dark road when this guy robbed him. Criminals tend to use things like night and privacy to commit their crimes. Rarely do seasoned criminals seek an audience when they do their deed.

Yes, I too would have stopped and lent a hand to the guy being robbed...gun or not in my hand. Having been a cop I've often thought about whether I would stop and assist local cops being shot at on a traffic stop. The answer is NO....I would use my car to run the stupid criminal down, thus ending the gun fight. I don't need a gun to prove my commitment to my fellow man to keep him and his safe. But it does help.

  • Censored- you have your right to your opinion and I will respect that. I used to work in a little place out in Kuna called the Idaho Maximum Security Prison as a Correctional Officer. I feel I know a little on how the criminals think after dealing and talking to them. One actually told me when he gets out he is going back to California since most people don't have guns. He joked that the people in Idaho needed to put signs in their yards saying they don't believe in guns so he would have known who he could have robbed. Turns out he was in for armed robbery until he robbed a house in Idaho and was shot by the homeowner. After release from the hospital he ended up in prison and after some fights he ended up in Max. Good thing he didn't have your address. If you where my neighbor you and your family would take comfort in me not interfering since you wouldn't want me to. And to your question, if the victim was would have had a weapon he wouldn't have been called victim but a law abiding citizen protecting himself.

  • First I ask have you ever been put in that situation? Your answer is most likly no. So don't sit there and judge what you would have done. The pure fact is you have no clue how you would react when faced with a similar situation and had to make a split second decision.

I know first hand what went on that night. My husband acted in a way many of you could only wish to do. Now, take in to consideration he was not the only one in that store this night. So was I(his wife) and the Cashier. How would you react? What would be going through your mind?

Now what do the guns have anything to do with anything. We have several of them. When a bank gets robbed do you have your gun just sitting in your pocket waiting for this to happen. No, the simple fact is no one "exspects" to encounter this walking into your neighborhod convinence store. Especially not in Mountain Home.

Now get of your high horses and say thank you to the person responsible for being stronger than you could imagine. Protecting not only me, the Cashier, but you as well. Thanks to him and the wonderful Mountain Home Police Department James Cyr will be behind bars and away from you and your kids!

Bananas, No one was questioning your husbands bravery. An idiot made a comment about where were all of us with a CWP to protect you and your husband.

I HAVE seen the business end of a pistol when I was robbed in Denver. I had no money and was pretty sure the robber wasn't gonna like it. I did about 5 years of talking in 30 seconds and between me and his girlftiend, we talked him out of doing anything more stupid. I got home safe that night by the grace of God. I vowed from that point on I would never be a victim again, nor would I allow anyone else to be a victim if I could help it. For me that means carrying a weapon to be used to defend myself, my family and others in my community.

I am truly glad that you, your husmabd and the cashier are ok. And I truly hope the cops have enough evidence to toss this piece of human garbage in prison for a long time.

  • Could this be the same guy who robbed Pauls Market?

  • Bananas- your anger is being sent in the wrong direction. I too have had a gun pointed at and discharged at me while I was at work and that was in a hospital. Nobody knows how they will react in a situation like yours or mine. The cashier, your husband and you couldn't really do anything else but comply and be robbed since he had a weapon and you didn't. In your case it was probably the right thing to do. Those of us that have been victims don't want to repeat it and it sounds like you don't really want to experience the helplessness again. Ask yourself shall I shop at Paul's, bye gas at the sunset C, bank at the home bank (it was robbed about 6 months ago), not use airman pawn (robbed less than a year ago), and never stop at the liquor store (also armed robbery last year). With the economy and lack of jobs do you think the crime rate will drop? More than likely you will face this situation more and more, what will you do next time and then the time after that next? What if the criminal is more desperate and doesn't care anymore, maybe even wanting to take someone with them? At least if you are properly trained and armed you would have a fighting chance, it is better than no chance at all. Our cops are good but can't be everywhere at once, and yes I carry my weapon into the bank either open carry or concealed it's legal. I suggest a weapons course it's educational, recreational, and fun to go shooting to practice in the evenings or you can pray. What every you do place your anger at the criminal not at others expressing outrage for the situation you and your husband went though, not at citizens supporting each other with discussion.

  • My husband was mugged at a rest area while traveling from one base to another. He was alone and had a gun, when they hit in the back of the head he pulled his pistol from his jacket and the only thing they could say was "oh s", they fled as fast as they could.

I would have never expected anything like this in Mountain Home until this week. I am very glad that everything went well, because it could always have gone bad, for the both sides.

Last week when we discussed the Paul's Market robbery and CWP, I stated, I would much rather thank the person who went through the hoops to get the CWP than wait to be herded into a cooler and shot. I am thankful for CWP holders, they have made the extra effort to keep themselves, their family and hopefully me safe in a world where anything can happen.
