Turn off the phones

Friday, February 26, 2010

Dear editor:

On the evening of Thursday, Feb. 11, I attended a concert at West Elementary School to hear my granddaughter and the other first graders sing. They had worked hard learning the songs and did such a great job. (However) I was appalled at the lack of courtesy given these children.

Before the concert, the music director requested the audience to be quiet and turn off their cell phones. In spite of that, the woman in front of me talked non-stop on her cell-phone while the children sang, and I saw others doing the same. People milled around restlessly, though the concert was but a half hour in length. Some visited with others in the audience.

Worst of all, these first-graders saw this rude behavior, and may have considered it normal.
