Boise man seriously injured in car-semi head-on on I-84

Monday, February 1, 2010

A Boise man was seriously injured early Monday morning when his pickup slid through the median of I-84 near milepost 73, came up on the roadway in the opposite lane and was struck by a semi.

David P. Bowers, 53, of Boise, was headed westbound in a 2002 Ford F350 pickup at about 5:30 a.m. when the accident occurred. Idaho State Police investigators said it appeared Bowers was driving too fast for the slick road conditions when he lost control, went into the median, rolled one full time before coming to rest in the left lane on the eastbound side.

His truck was then struck by a semi with a box trailer driven by Timothy D. Martin, 41, of Boise, and pushed back into the median.

Bowers was transported by ambulance to St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise with serious injuries. His passenger, Jonathan E. Hanson, 43, of Emmett, was also transported to the same hospital with minor injuries. Martin, the semi driver, received no injuries. All occupants were wearing seatbelts and alcohol was not a factor.

Road conditions Monday were extremely treacherous. Fog reduced visibility to less than 200 yards and froze on the roads, making driving conditions very slick. A number of slide-offs, most without any injuries, were reported throughout Elmore County Monday morning because of the conditions.

The crash at milepost 73 remains under investigation by Trooper Pattis with assistance from members of the Idaho State Police Commercial Vehicle Safety and the Idaho State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit.
