Lady Tigers end season with back-to-back wins

The Mountain Home Lady Tigers close out their regular season basketball schedule Thursday night at home against Bishop Kelly.

The Lady Tigers picked up two more conference wins last week, over Kuna and Columbia.

Mtn. Home 45, Kuna 18

The Lady Tigers' defense clamped down on Kuna last Thursday night, holding the Lady Kavemen to just six points in three of the four quarters and 18 for the game, as they cruised to a 45-18 conference win.

Mountain Home shot out to an early 5-0 lead and led 11-2 after a quarter. They held Kuna scoreless in the second quarter and increased their lead to 19-2 at the half.

Kuna managed 12 points in the third quarter but went without scoring the last 3:15 of the period as the Lady Tigers increased their lead to 37-14 after three. Mountain Home went on to win 45-18.

Lady Tiger head coach Brent Keener thought his girls had a great defensive effort.

"Defensively, I thought the effort was great, but offensively, that's not going to cut it. The turnovers -- they were just unforced turnovers. Yeah, they put a little pressure on us, nothing spectacular, we're just not taking care of the basketball. We've really got to clean some things up."

Blas Lord and Shelby Posey led the Mountain Home scoring with 13 points each. Posey had 12 rebounds. Charde Huntington netted seven points and also brought down 12 boards. Rachel Warila scored four points and Arlene Futch, Jessica Liercke, Angie Rios and Dakota Barrie each had two points.

Mountain Home also won the sophomore and JV games.

Mtn. Home 53, Columbia 24

The Lady Tigers hosted Columbia in a Saturday afternoon game in Lloyd Schiller Gymnasium, rolling to a 53-24 win.

The winless Lady Wildcats caused some problems in the first quarter for Mountain Home but an 8-0 run in the first and second quarter helped the Lady Tigers take a 22-12 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Mountain Home came out in the third quarter in the midst of a 16-0 run that carried over into the fourth quarter as they stretched their lead to 45-20 with 4:04 left in the game. An 8-4 edge the rest of the way made it a 53-24 final.

"Execution-wise, I thought we had some extremely good looks," said Coach Keener after the game. "Early on, we didn't make a ton of those, but they were shots that we definitely want to take, so I was pleased with that. Defensively, I thought we had a great effort, too. I thought Shelby did a great job on (Lindsey) Wakelam."

Dakota Barrie and Shelby Posey both had double-doubles to lead Mountain Home. Barrie had 19 points and 10 rebounds. Posey scored 11 and brought down 13 boards. Blas Lord added nine points, Rachel Warila and Charde Huntington both had six and Cheyenne Castillo scored two points.

The win improved the Lady Tigers to 13-4 overall and 9-3 in league play. They traveled to Skyview Tuesday night and close out their regular season Thursday night at home against Bishop Kelly for Senior Night. The number two seed in the district tournament could be on the line in the Bishop Kelly game.

"If we take care of business against Skyview, who's much improved -- they put up 69 points on Kuna so we've got to look at Skyview first, and then, if we just take care of business against BK, we'll be fine," said Coach Keener. "Middleton beat BK the other night by 17, we lost to Middleton by four at their place, so that should tell the girls something right there."

The District III 4A Girls Basketball Tournament begins Feb. 3, with the top four teams hosting the first round. The higher seeds also will host in the second round on Feb. 6.
