Police investigating vehicle break-ins

The Mountain Home Police Department continued to investigate a series of vehicle break-ins over the past several days on the city's north side near Legacy Park.

Suspects broke into at least seven cars Sunday evening specifically targeting homes in the 500 and 600 blocks of East 17th North Street with additional thefts reported on North 3rd East and Haskett streets.

According to Mountain Home Police Chief John Walter, those targeted left their car doors open, giving suspects easy access to compact disks, spare change and garage door openers.

"These were crimes of opportunity," Walter said.

However, the theft of the electronic door openers concerned the police chief since it's possible these same thieves will strike again when these people are not home.

"It's like giving them a key to your front door," Walter said. "You don't know if and when these people will come back."

In other news, city police arrested a 19-year-old Mountain Home man for allegedly vandalizing outdoor Christmas lights at a local home the evening of Dec. 19. It's not known if Joseph Witrosky is behind a series of similar cases involving the theft or vandalism of similar outdoor decorations.
