Ambulance crews prepare the injured student for transport.

A young man, believed to be a high school student, was struck by a car at the corner of Jackson Street and N. Third East Street at about 7:20 a.m. Wednesday.

According to initial police reports, an independent witness said the driver of the car had been heading east on Jackson Street, had stopped at the stop sign, and then began to turn south on Third East Street.

The student was riding his bicycle at a "fast clip" westbound on Jackson Street, according to the eyewitness, and made a diagonal turn onto Third East Street without stopping at the stop sign, riding directly into the path of the turning vehicle.

The youth appeared to have suffered a broken leg when he was struck by the car. He was taken to Elmore Medical Center for treatment.

  • Glad that all he suffered was a broken leg...could've been a lot worse. Good time to talk to our kids about bike safety and pedestrian safety!

  • A lot of children in town just dart out into traffic without looking and sometimes vehicles don't have time to stop. It is so scary that the children in town don't pay attention or just assume the vehicle will stop. Thank goodness that this situation wasn't worse. It is so important for parents to talk to their children about bicycle and pedestrian safety.

  • Glad he isn't hurt worse. At age 17 he knows better, I say he should be ticketed.

  • A lot of ADULTS dart out into traffic on their bikes, ride on the wrong side of the road and ignore stop signs...THEY should be ticketed.

  • That young man was lucky he only suffered a possible broken leg. He should get ticketed. There are too many people not following the bike rules. Kids are riding right down the middle of the street not stopping at the corners without regard for traffic. Something needs to be done about this situation.

  • Well first off I am glad he is o.k., and the driver of the car is o.k., however to voice on the side of bicyclists,(not in this case because it sounds like he ran the stop sign)people don't pay attention, we are all at fault for this at one time or another. Everyone period should be more careful and attentive, we could all pay attention more.

  • Remember,

Children and Drivers should be just as aware. Crosswalks are just that, CROSSWALKS, not Cross-rides.

Seeing the kid on the ground and having seenthe bike before it was removed, kid in darker clothes, the bike was black...and no headlight or tail light as required by law. I would say the kid was at fault and the unfotunate person driving the car saw nothing but darkness before the kid darted out in fron of her. Folks if you let your kid ride their bike to school, go down to Walmart and buy them the proper safety equipemnt. It may not be "cool" to have those reflectors and a headlight and tail light. It may not be cool to wear that helmet. It might not be faster if you slow down and look for traffic. But it might save their lives.
