Coin flip to be held at junior high

Friday, September 25, 2009

The coin flip to decide the outcome of the May 19 school board election will be held at the junior high, rather than the school board's regular meeting room, in order to accommodate a possible large crowd. The meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. and is expected to last about 15 minutes.

  • I am outraged over this matter! Mountain Home School Board Trustees should be shame of yourselves for what you are trying to do to Mr. Houston. First you hired incompetent people to

conduct the election. The three so called illegal voters did nothing illegal. Most citizens here in Mountain Home do not know the school zone they reside in. The job of poll workers is to insure that all voters live in the correct school zone. Poll workers/Election Judge committed the illegal act by certifying three unqualified people, issuing them ballots and allowing them to vote. Someone should be held accountable. Secondly, five concerned citizens of the Mountain Home who happens to be seated trustees on the Mountain Home School Board files a contest in the Fourth District Court challenging Mr. Houston's election after Mr. Murray had already conceded the election, and stated that he would not challenge the election in spite of the three votes that was in question. Is there something unethical about this? I guess the School Board trustees did not like the results of the election. Well, Mountain Home School Board Trustees do not make the decision as to who will serve on the school board; that is why we have elections. It is the left to the voters of Zone 4. Finally, Mr. Alexander and four other trustees decided to seat Mr. Houston as a Trustee. Mr. Houston has served as Zone 4 Trustee for the last couple of months and base on the coin toss he may have to step down and give up his seat. Are you kidding me? Are you guys trying to torture the guy or what? All

five trustees were present when Mr. Houston was seated, and he was seated without objection. I was leaning toward Mr. Houston based upon his experience before all this transpired, but you can bet you bottom dollar that I strongly support Mr. Houston. Mr. Murray has been honorable but, he conceded the election. The end does not justify the means. We need new leadership for our school board now!

  • Why not have a new election. I dont think a coin toss is fair. I thought we were in 2009 not the 1800's.

I think this is a dumb law. But even if you disagree with the school board members, they have to follow the law. The best way to avoid situations like this is not to get in them - make sure people from the right district are voting where and when they should be. The other thing to consider is it was a tie, Murray conceded and Houston was seated. To me the case was closed. If it was going to come down to a coin flip because of the antiquated law, why did it take this long? That was May, this is almost October. It should have happened the week after the tie was determined. Poor management is the only reason I can see there. There's no reason to jerk Houston around, if the coin flip does indeed unseat him, or Murray for that matter (even though he conceded).
