Lady Tigers kick in key victories

Wednesday, September 9, 2009

It was a good week for Mountain Home Lady Tiger soccer as they picked up wins over Columbia and Middleton in conference girls soccer.

Mountain Home 1, Columbia 0

Rachel Warila scored in the first five minutes of the second half and it held up Tuesday as the Lady Tigers beat Columbia 1-0 at Eastside Park in Mountain Home.

Mountain Home girls soccer coach Dan Snelgrow was proud of his Lady Tigers' effort.

"We needed to work through a game entirely -- play two halves. We talked about that before the game and we talked about it at halftime. We didn't get everybody in the game, but we will, later on in the season. I thought it was important tonight that the girls see hard work pays off. It was a battle -- 1-0

"Anastasia (Sansone) came in (at goal keeper) -- Alicen (Wendall) is out for a week because of a bad ankle -- Anastasia came in and played unbelievable. She only had a couple shots on goal, but she made the saves, she got the ball out and got it back on the attack and I think she did an awesome job."

Mountain Home had 12 shots on goal for the night.

Anastasia Sansone had three saves on goal for Mountain Home.

Coach Snelgrow said the win was sweet because Columbia had beaten Mountain Home twice at district last year, the last time to keep them from going to state.

"I wasn't here for that because I was deployed, but I sat at home this weekend and looked in the book and I saw those scores, and the girls and I talked about that yesterday. They were focused. They were a little bit low-key starting off I thought -- I thought they'd be a little more pumped up -- but I think they were focused, and they were ready to get after it."

Mountain Home 5, Middleton 1

Mountain Home took control of the game early and shot their way to a 5-1 win over Middleton in conference soccer at Eastside Park Thursday.

Rachel Warila and Shelby Henrick both had two goals and an assist, Shannon Caldwell had a goal, and Jessica Tindall and Jasmine Deroy had assists. The Lady Tigers had 33 shots on goal for the game.

Anastasia Sansone had a great game at goalkeeper, recording 12 saves.

"That was one of the best games I've witnessed the high school girls play since I've been in Mountain Home," said a pleased Coach Snelgrow after the game. "They played with confidence, moved the ball well. The defense was solid and it was a total team effort."

The win improved Mountain Home to 4-1 on the season and 3-1 in conference play. The Lady Tigers were home against Kuna in conference action this Tuesday, travel to Nampa Thursday and have a big showdown at Bishop Kelly next Tuesday.
