Dealers have mixed results with 'Cash for Clunkers' program

A lot of the clunkers turned in were questionable as to whether or not they should have been on the street.

Dozens of people from the Mountain Home area flocked to the city's auto dealerships in recent weeks to trade in vehicles for new, more fuel efficient brands as part of the federal Cash for Clunkers rebate program.

"We did a lot of deals on it... a huge rush on small cars," said Darren Potter, senior sales manager for the Mountain Home Auto Ranch. "We stocked up in anticipation of the rush with some cars remaining."

The Auto Ranch experienced a significant surge in business during the first week of the Car Allowance Rebate System -- commonly known as Cash for Clunkers program-- with sales returning to regular levels in the following weeks, Potter said.

Excitement about the Cash for Clunkers program brought in additional shoppers to Performance Chevrolet on Airbase Road, but the dealership didn't sell any new cars as part of the federal rebate program.

  • i believe we got rid of the old pickups but should have got rid of the new ones like my 2008 dodge with a hemi engine-- got all of 7 mpg in going to the mountains last week.... my old 63 ford did three times as good on gas mph.
