Lady Tigers thwart Jerome 7-3

Thursday, August 27, 2009

Rachel Warila scored five goals to help lead the Mountain Home Lady Tigers to a 7-3 non-conference soccer win over Jerome Saturday at Eastside Park.

Jerome took a 1-0 lead early on a penalty kick, and Mountain Home tied it a few minutes later on a Warila goal. Warila scored two more goals in the first half to give Mountain Home a 3-1 lead at halftime and added two more in the first three minutes of the second half to make it 5-1 Mountain Home.

Jerome scored on another penalty kick midway through the second half, but Claudia Bermensolo and Shelbie Henrick followed with additional goals for Mountain Home.

Jerome scored right before the game ended to make it a 7-3 final.

Mountain Home girls soccer coach Dan Snelgrow was pleased with the win.

"We need to work on our conditioning a little bit, but our effort is definitely there, and the girls played well.

"I need to work on my emotions a little bit on the sidelines with the referees, but beside that, it was a very good effort. Everybody got in and everybody did something productive to allow us to win this game, and that's what it's all about."

Coach Snelgrow was also pleased with the play of his goalkeeper, Alicen Wendall, who had nine saves on goal.

"Alicen played an outstanding game. We've been riding her through training about getting out and being aggressive and being a leader on the field and today she did a very good job of that."

The Lady Tigers opened their conference schedule Tuesday at Emmett and travel to Skyview on Thursday. They're back home to face Columbia on Sept. 1.
