City begins looking for a new home for Youth Center

Tuesday, September 8, 2009

While efforts continue to build a community recreation center in Mountain Home, city leaders and volunteers pursue options to find a new home for the Mountain Home Youth Center.

A non-profit organization, the youth center opened in June 1990 to promote a safe, drug-free environment for youngsters and teens in the Mountain Home area.

However, its current location near the corner of Jackson and North Main streets remains a concern with city leaders from a child safety perspective.

"The main problem... is its location. You would be hard pressed to say that this is a great place for a youth center," said Mayor Tom Rist. "There is virtually no parking there, and the traffic is severe."

Its current location also puts it within a block of four businesses that primarily sell alcohol. However, youth center manager Charlotte Moody-Emerson said the center normally closes before the city's bar district gets busy.

  • Always thought the old King's building would be a nice place for a Youth Center. It's still on a busy street, but there are traffic lights and crosswalks, and it has parking.

I agree, the basement lends to a roller skating ring.. I have always thought that would make a good youth area, so much room
