Group forms to explore idea of Y partnering with WECRD

Wednesday, August 5, 2009
Members of the Community Development Leadership Committee met for the first time last week.

The Community Development Leadership Committee (CLDC) held its first organization meeting last week.

The CLDC has been formed by the Treasure Valley YMCA as part of its partnership agreement with the Western Elmore County Recreation District (WECRD) to evaluate the WECRD's proposals for a community center in Mountain Home.

The CLDC will report to the Y, which will then evaluate its final proposals and make a recommendation to the WECRD. The rec district board already has agreed to accept whatever final recommendations are made.

The embattled rec district entered into the agreement with the Y to determine if its plans for a center, which currently include a public indoor swimming pool, are feasible.

But the CLDC, chaired by Alan Bermensolo and Mark Hiddleston, is under no obligation to follow the WECRD's current concepts for its proposed facility.

Instead, it will look at an entire range of options for providing recreational opportunities for Elmore County residents.

"We intend that this entire process will be open and transparent," Bermensolo said, and will involve a wide and diverse range of community members in order to obtain the best input regarding the future operations of the WECRD.

This is your tax dollars at work folks! Funny...with the YMCA involved and the project on "hold" pending the outcome/ideas of these groups it is funny that the budget, compared to last year, has gone UP. The proposed budget for 2008-2009 was $440,590.00.

Great job on the PR girls! Did the Y review your budget prior so that they could tell you what was in conflict? My guess is no. Bang up job.

    THE WECRD BOARD SHOULD RESIGN!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This is what Crapo's office thinks this project is all about based on the info they have been provided. Kind of interesting.

Project Name: WERC, Mountain Home, ID, for planning, design, and construction of an energy efficient, multi use community center

    Amount Requested: $1,200,000

Recipient: Western Elmore County Recreation District

    Location: Mountain Home

Public Interest: Mtn. Home AFB will host the Singapore Air Force to bed down and train pilots on a long-term basis. The associated personnel will become a part of the community and require a fitness/civic center. Most of these personnel and their families will live in town because of the decrease in availability of Base housing. Mountain Home itself has grown by 20% over the past 3 years and is slated for 1400 more homes in the next year. Marathon Cheese opened a packaging plant in January 2007 and plans to employ over 500 skilled workers. Veteran population continues to increase and Mountain Home has the largest per capita population of veterans. With our severe winters, it makes it very difficult to drive to Boise to receive needed warm-water therapy or other therapies that will be provided at the WECRC in collaboration with the local doctors and physical therapists.

Description: For a fitness/civic center for residents of Mountain Home Air Force Base.
