Jumping off bridges is illegal

Wednesday, June 17, 2009

The Elmore County Sheriff's Office is reminding area residents that it is illegal to congregate, loiter or jump from any bridge in the county.

An ordinance preventing that activity was passed by the county last August.

The sheriff's office will soon be installing signs on all the major bridges in the county notifying people of the ordinance.

And while it is illegal to do those things now, and people can be cited, once the signs are up the sheriff's office plans on a vigorous enforcement of the ordinance.

The measure was passed as a matter of safety to individuals, and also to reduce costs of rescues.

  • We used to jump off bridges into the South Fork of the Boise River near Pine when I grew up in Mtn. Home. Then at twin pipes we'd swim and jump off the railroad tracks. Some of my favorite memories. Alas, "public safety" rears its ugly head again. Sure, it wasn't safe. Most of us got stitches, bruises and an occasional broken bone. But it was FUN, and I'm sure we all prize the memories of that childhood stupidity.
