One in seven T.V sets in Elmore County may go dark.

Friday, June 12, 2009

After Friday, June 12, all full-power television stations in the United States will no longer be broadcasting in analog and will transmit only digital signals.

At the beginning of 2009, statistics show this transition would effect about 14 percent of Elmore County.

The transition will affect about 1,280 local households who watch free over-the-air television (through a rooftop antenna or "rabbit ears") out of 9,100 households who have televisions.

That compares to other counties:

* 0 percent of Camas County (zero free over-air out of 490 households with televisions).

* 25.2 percent of Ada County (37,350 free over-air out of 148,490 households with televisions).

* 30.2 percent of Owyhee County (1,120 free over-air out of 3,710 households with televisions).

Anyone who is not a cable or satellite TV subscriber, or who has an older analog television, will need to either upgrade their TV, or connect their analog TV to a digital (DTV) converter box by Friday to have service.

Some people may also need to have antennas.
