ESA launches food drive to help hungry

Wednesday, March 25, 2009

Area food banks are struggling to provide services for the growing demand of local residents who need food.

As a result, the Alpha Omicron Chapter of Epsilon Sigma Alpha (ESA) will launch a major food donation drive beginning March 30 and continuing through April 3.

Donations will be collected at Hawley's Automotive, 650 American legion Blvd., the Hair Hut, 120 N. 3rd East St., and Moxie Java, 390 American Legion Blvd.

The grade schools and Hacker Middle School also are collecting food for the project, according to Rowena Hawley, who is helping organized it.

"There are so many people in Mountain Home that need food assistance," she said, noting that she had recently volunteered at one local food pantry, at Grace Lutheran Church, and there was a steady stream of people all afternoon showing up to obtain a box of food for their families.

"Many people are going hungry and we are hoping that the food drive can provide some relief to those in need."

Hawley said all the local food pantries can use assistance. "I'm surprised some of the bigger organizations in town aren't doing a massive food drive," she said.

The ESA drive will, specifically, benefit the Grace Lutheran pantry, which provides food to the general public without any religious affiliation test.
