Lack of students forcing closure of Pine school

Wednesday, February 25, 2009
The school district has decided to close the Pine School when the next school year begins.

Pine School, a facility that has been open since the early 1900s, may be on the verge of closing due to a lack of students for the upcoming school year, but residents of the area have pleaded that it stay open despite district policy on attendance numbers.

Located at 160 S. Lester Creek Road in Pine, Pine School is a one-room schoolhouse with a total of eight students this year, one in kindergarten, three in second grade, two in fifth grade and two in eighth grade.

Based on district policy, in order to keep the school open Pine must have eight children or more enrolled at the beginning of the school year and keep at least five to stay open. Currently, Pine has three students enrolled for the upcoming school year.See the mountainhomenews for the complete story.

  • So........How much will it cost to bus the kids 1.5 hours each way (assuming the weather is good)? Is the school district going to provide lodging and daycare if the road is closed while they are at school? Kids will be doing a 12 hour schoolday. Wake up, sometimes there are extenuating circumstances.
