Special Olympics torch relay will pass though town

The 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games begin Feb. 7 but the Special Olympic spirit will come to Mountain Home next Wednesday, Feb. 4.

The Special Olympic Flame of Hope, which resembles the Olympic Torch, will pass though Mountain Home at 2:20 p.m. that day.

The torch will arrive in Mountain Home at 2:20 p.m. at the city's new parking lot on what used to be the El Rancho site and will proceed north through downtown on North 2nd East Street to American Legion, American Legion to North 14th East Street and end at Mountain Home Junior High School, where a ceremony will take place.

Mountain Home was selected as a host city for the games and will play host to seven snowshoe athletes, four coaches and two honored guests from Uzbekistan.

The Nazarene Church of Mountain Home, which is playing host to the delegation, is holding a reception for the group at the church at 6:30 p.m Feb. 4. That event is open to all members of the community

The athletes will arrive in Mountain Home on Feb. 3 and stay with host families until the start of the games, Feb. 7, to acclimate to the area's weather and culture.
