Tragic accident claims life of 10-year old

Wednesday, January 21, 2009

A 10-year-old Mountain Home girl, Hailey Elizabeth Woods, was killed Sunday afternoon when she fell off her bicycle into the path of a teenage motorcyclist, was struck, and died later that night at a a Boise hospital.

Woods is the daughter of James Woods, Jr., and his wife, Amy, and Christina Cnudde and her husband, Gary.

The accident occurred at approximately 5:36 p.m. on NW Bradford Ave. According to the Elmore County Sheriff's Office, after the girl fell off her bike she was struck by a motorcycle being driven by a 14-year-old male, who had been following behind her. There were reports that a 12-year-old male also was riding the bike at the time, and the two youths may be the only witnesses to the tragedy.

Although the motorcycle, described as a dirt bike, was street legal, it is not legal for a 14-year-old to be driving one on the streets. Some reports have indicated that the teen's parents were not aware of his use of the machine.

Woods was pronounced dead at 9:50 p.m. that night after being taken by air ambulance to St. Luke's Regional Medical Center.

No further details were immediately available. The teenage driver of the motorcycle, and his passenger, had not been identified by press time.

The investigation by the Elmore County Sheriff's Office is continuing.

A benefit fund has been established in Hailey's name at Home Federal Savings and Loan.

Wal-Mart will hold a special sale Saturday in Hailey's name.

Both events are to help the family with expenses.

  • This is such a tragic story and she was such a beautiful girl. My heart aches for this family. I'm sorry is not enough...My thoughts have been with you---as well as most of Mountain Home's thoughts, I'm sure--since the accident occurred. Much love is being sent your way by many strangers.
