Wrestlers take two of three

In a busy week of wrestling, the Mountain Home Tigers claimed two of three dual match wins, and finished fifth at the Madison Wrestling Tournament over the weekend in Rexburg.

Tigers 44

Parma 30

The Tigers won nine of 14 matches with the Parma Panthers last Tuesday night in Lloyd Schiller Gymnasium to beat the Panthers 44-30.

Picking up wins by pins were Tommy Miller at 130 pounds, Kaeo Doronio at 140 and James Bailey at 285.

The Tigers also picked up forfeit wins at 112 and 135.

Erwin Ruiz (125) and Cody Staebler (145) won major decisions and DeVonte McClain (119) and Joe Russell both won by decisions.

The Tigers forfeited 103, 189 and 215 pounds. Tim Hazelbaker (160) and Michael Heinen (171) lost by pins.

Weiser 43

Tigers 30

The Tigers gave up four pins and two forfeits and lost eight of the 14 matches in their 43-30 loss to Weiser.

Ryan Goldsby (140 pounds) and James Bailey (285) won by pins for the Tigers. Kaeo Doronio (135) and Cody Staebler (145) won by technical fall, and Tommy Miller (130) and Tim Hazelbaker (160) won by major decisions.

Kevin Anderson (189) lost by decision, Michael Heinen (171) lost by major decision, and Cory Pinque (112), DeVonte McClain (119), Erwin Ruiz (125) and Joe Russell (152) all lost by pins. Tigers forfeited the 103- and 215-pound weight classes.

Tigers 65

Skyview 9

The Tigers traveled over to Skyview last Thursday night for a conference dual and beat the Hawks 65-9.

The Tigers traveled to Rexburg for the Madison Invitational Wrestling Tournament over the weekend, and came away with a fifth-place finish, with seven of the 11 wrestlers that wrestled placing.

Blackfoot won the tourney with 229.5 points. Pocatello was second with 189, Jerome third with 163, Bonneville fourth with 152, Mountain Home fifth with 105.5, South Fremont sixth with 84, followed by Middleton, 79, Hillcrest, 78, Madison, 77, Wood River, 64, Rigby, 59, Burley, 57, North Fremont, 48 and Century, 44.

Kaeo Doronio won the 130-pound weight class.

Cory Pinque and Michael Heinen both finished fourth, Pinque at 112, Heinen at 171. Tucker Martin finished fifth at 189 pounds and DeVonte McClain (119), Tommy Miller (135) and Tim Hazelbaker (160) all finished sixth.

Ryan Goldsby (140) and Cody Staebler (145) both went 2-2 and were one win away from placing.

The Tigers host Nampa in a conference dual Thursday night in Lloyd Schiller Gymnasium in Mountain Home. This Friday and Saturday the Tigers will be at the Tiger-Griz Tournament in Idaho Falls.

While the Mountain Home Tigers varsity competed at the Madison varsity tourney, the Tigers' JV also competed at Madison at the JV Tournament, finishing second.

Blackfoot won the JV tourney with 269 points. Mountain Home was second with 154. Bonneville was third with 128, South Fremont was fourth, with115, and Wood River was fifth with 100 points. There were 13 teams competing.

Seven Mountain Home wrestlers placed at the JV tourney, led by Erwin Ruiz, who took first at 125 pounds. Perry Savage at 135 pounds, and Kevin Anderson at 160, both finished second. Third-place efforts went to Joe Gutierrez at 112 pounds and Travis Goldsby at 145. Fourth-place efforts went to Zach Pomerantz at 130 pounds, and Joe Russell at 152 pounds.
