Military kids offered chance to go to Sun Valley camp

Thursday, January 15, 2009

Operation Military Kids and the University of Idaho 4-H Youth Development Technology program will host a Military Family Winter Camp for National Guard and Reserve service personnel and family members at its central Idaho 4-H Camp (near Sun Valley) Feb. 27 to March 1.

Idaho's National Guard and Reserve service and family members (all branches) who have been impacted by deployment, including spouses who are "on their own," may attend the weekend "Purple" camp for $35 per person. The price includes lodging, meals and snacks, deluxe bus, snowcat and sleigh rides, equipment and activities.

Eligible youth should be ages 12-18 and must be accompanied by an adult family member.

Space is limited and is on a first come, first served basis, so preregistration is being encouraged. The deadline to apply is Feb. 6.

Active duty personnel may apply for the wait list.

"Share a unique experience with about 25 other families as you 'rough it,' join in team challenge games, build a snow cave, learn survival skills, track animals in the snow, experience 'Night Tubing,' snowshoe or cross-country ski, sing by the campfire, ride in a horse-drawn sleigh, and enjoy other fun activities planned by 4-H, community and military youth and adult volunteers," a spokesperson for the group said.

Bus transportation will be provided from Gowen Field in Boise and from Mountain Home.

This sounds like a great program. Just wish the children of active duty would receive the same offer. Instead they can apply but are placed on a waiting list. I wonder why that is? I am not saying that the guard and reserve families are not just as important as the active duty but all I seem to hear about is programs for them and hardly anything for the active duty families. But then again, I may just have bliners on and am not seeing the whole picture.

  • Old guy,

Acive Duty kids have a camp every year called Operation Purple. My daughter has gone the past 3 years and loves it. It is open to all Military kids but active duty who have recently been deployed has prioriy. The Youth Center on base runs an excellent program.

PARKS & REC have a wonderful program for snowboarding and skiing. They provide the transportation to Soldier Mountain for 4 Saturdays. It's very reasonable for what is offered.
