Wrestlers finish sixth at tourney

The Mountain Home Tigers wrestling team finished sixth at the Buhl Invitational Wrestling Tournament over the weekend in Buhl.

Challis won the team title with 133 points, edging Jerome by one point. Minico was third with 127, Snake River fourth with 114.5, North Fremont fifth with 108, and Mountain Home in sixth place with 105.5 points. There were 24 teams competing in the two-day tournament.

Tommy Miller went undefeated in the tourney, winning the 130-pound weight class. Kaeo Doronio finished second at 135 pounds, and Cory Pinque finished third at 112 pounds.

Coming within one win of placing were D.J. Hale, DeVonte McClain and Tim Hazelbaker.

"We had a lot of our guys stay in after the first day, and a lot of them stayed in quite a whole the second day," said Tiger wrestling coach Lynn Knudson.

"It was a good team effort for us there. I was really pleased with the way we wrestled."

While the varsity wrestlers were at the Buhl Invitational a number of JV wrestlers went to a JV tourney at Twin Falls where they had great success.

Taking first place at the JV Tourney at Twin Falls were Joe Gutierrez at 112 pounds, Zach Pomerantz at 130 and Cody Staebler at 145.

Erwin Ruiz finished second at 125 pounds and third-place efforts went to Stefan White at 130 pounds and Austin Clark at 140.

The Tigers hosted a tri-match Tuesday with Weiser and Parma. Thursday they go to Skyview for a conference dual, and Friday and Saturday is the Madison Invitational Tournament.

Earlier in the week, the Tigers had traveled to Emmett on Wednesday to face the Huskies in a conference dual and won 51-15.

Picking up wins by pins for the Tigers were James Bailey (285 pounds), Cory Pinque (112), D.J. Hale (130), Kaeo Doronio (135), Ryan Goldsby (140) and Tim Hazelbaker (160). Picking up wins by decisions were Michael Heinen (171), Kevin Anderson (189), T.J. Billinger (119), DeVonte McClain (125) and Junior Ruiz (145).

Travis Goldsby lost a 9-3 decision at 152 pounds and the Tigers forfeited at 103 and 215 pounds.
