Freshmen Tigers lose two to Glenns Ferry

Wednesday, January 7, 2009

The ninth-grade boy's basketball team stayed busy over the holidays by playing two games against the Glenns Ferry Pilots "C" team.

Glenns Ferry won both contests, 40-33 and 44-40.

In the first game, it was the outside shooting of Adrian Martinez and the inside game of Josh Carpenter that did the young Tigers in. That twosome allowed the Pilots to jump to a 23-15 halftime lead and allowed the Pilots to extend their lead to 32-17 heading into the fourth quarter.

In the fourth period, however, the Tigers fought back, out-scoring the Pilots 16-8, but they came up short on the 40-33 score.

For the Pilots, Martinez led the team with 12 points. Carpenter had 11, Chris Popoca had six points, Wilder Jones had four points, Marco Garcia had three points, and Oz Rubi and Darren Patterson each had two points.

For the Tigers, Jared Day led the team with ten points. Alex Rodriquez had nine points, Derek Doerr, Chaise Hopkins and Tyler Knauth each had four points. Jake Hennessey rounded out the scoring with two points.

Rodriquez led the team with 11 rebounds.

The teams took Christmas off then squared off in game two last Tuesday.

The Tigers tried to change their playing style by not falling behind so early in a game and looked good in the first half, only trailing 26-17 at halftime.

In the second half the young Tigers played hard but their failure to make foul shots down the stretch doomed them as the Pilots claimed the 44-40 victory.

Adrian Martinez again led the Pilots with 15 points. Chris Popoca had 11 points, Josh Carpenter had nine points, Wilder Jones had five points and Oz Rubi had four points.

The Pilots improved their record to 10-1.

For the Tigers eight of their ten players scored.

Alex Rodriquez and Derek Doerr led the team with nine points. Rodriquez also led the team with nine rebounds. Jake Hennessey had eight points, Tony McKenzie had five points and Garrett Burton had four points. Luke Filipovich and Jared Dax each had two points, and Chaise Hopkins rounded out the scoring with one point.

The team's record is 1-5.

They travel to Nampa on Friday to take on the Bulldogs.
