Authorities ask for help in case of 'serious road rage'

Thursday, December 11, 2008

The Elmore County Sheriff's Office is investigating what it calls "a serious case of road rage" Wednesday morning, Dec. 10, and asking the public for help in solving the incident.

Authorities believe the incident began around 1:09 a.m. near milepost 74 in Elmore County when two vehicles apparently were involved in what a witness described as a "cat and mouse game" while traveling Eastbound on 1-84.

The witness reported that one of the vehicles actually ran the other vehicle off the road near milepost 74. The vehicle that had left the road then traveled back onto the interstate and began pursuing the other vehicle. The witness called Elmore County Sheriff's Dispatch and reported it.

An Elmore County Sheriff's Deputy responded to the area and could not locate the crash or the reckless drivers.

But the subsequent investigation has found that the two vehicles apparently had some type of violent engagement again, the second time near exit 90 in Mountain Home, and a man believed to have been in one of the vehicles, later identified as Dustin Craner of Jerome, was run over by the other vehicle.

Later that morning Jerome Police and Detectives responded to a call at a home in their community and discovered a seriously injured Craner.

Craner was transported to the hospital and then flown by air ambulance to St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise with life-threatening injuries. Craner is listed in serious condition.

Another person believed to have been in one of the the vehicles was interviewed by investigators at that time. Authorities said he was initially "evasive" but "is now cooperating with investigators."

The vehicle that investigators are looking for is a Silver or White smaller car with a partial Idaho plate of M 406.

Investigators are asking for anyone that may have been on the interstate between Boise and Jerome that may have witnessed the incident to contact the Elmore County Detectives at 587-2121, Jerome Detectives at 208-308-4208 or the Idaho State Police Investigations office at 208-884-7110.

All three of those agencies are cooperating in the investigation, which is continuing.
