Rec district mulls moving ahead with pool plans

Wednesday, September 3, 2008

The Mountain Home City Council met with members of the Western Elmore Country Recreation District in a special council meeting Thursday night. The meeting was the first between the two bodies.

WECRD board president Doug Belt told the council the district would like to go to bid on a building in the fall with construction starting after the first of the new year.

However, their fiscal year budget does not show building expenses and Belt said the board does not have a business plan or know how much it will cost residents to use the facility or the annual operation cost of the facility.

The board plans to build a portion of the building, focusing on the facility's aquatic center. The facility will hold two pools, a therapeutic and a recreation pool, which board members said would cost $1.1 million to build.

The aquatic portion of the building is approximately a quarter of the building's proposed 42,422 square feet.

Go check out the WECRD web site. They state they are doing an economic impact study to determine a location for a building. I guess the land already paid for is either not good enough or they have not update the web site in 8 years.

Also according to the banter box, the WECRD has been misquoted by this paper several times.

Lastly, the first lesson learned in business is to have a plan in place BEFORE starting the business. But according to the WECRD, they have no plan for expenses. Guess someone needs to go to school and learn some things.

  • The WECRD is composed of volunteers with a vision for our community to have something which is truly enjoyable. For those of you griping I can only say get your fat duff off the couch and go help them with a business plan, search for grant money to support the cause, talk to people locally about possible programs at this facility when it is constructed and go visit some of the other facilities around the country like they are proposing - only then will you understand why it will be truly fantastic to build something like this at Mountain Home.

We need to have more people like this who are willing to donate their time and talents to give us a gift even if it does take several years to raise the funding, create the business plan, and begin construction.

Simply we need to walk in their shoes and fully understand what is required to accomplish this task - most people can't even begin to comprehend the process they simply want to complain.
