Ed Freeman receives his Medal of Honor from President Bush.

Flags around the city and county are being flown at half mast today in honor of Medal of Honor recipient Major Ed. W. Freeman, U.S. Army (Retired).

Freeman, of Boise, died Wednesday after battling health issues for several weeks and will be buried with full military honors Saturday at the Idaho Veteran's Cemetery.

Freeman was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor by President George W. Bush for his actions in Vietnam on Nov. 14, 1965. The award's citation can be found here.

Freeman's (Too Tall) actions were documented in the book "We were Soldiers Once... and Young" written by Harold G. Moore. The book was adapted into the movie "We were Soldiers."

  • God bless him. And, say a prayer for America.

  • My sincerest condolences to his family...and my deepest appreciation for his courage and sacrifices.

That said, since was an Army MoH winner, I am certain he would have gently and humbly corrected the MH News staff for incorrectly stating that "...flags around the city and county are being flown at half-staff...". Flags are flown half-mast only aboard sea vessels. They are flown half-staff everywhere on land.
