Janet Langfitt seeking District 1 county commissioner's seat

Wednesday, April 30, 2008

Democrat Janet Langfitt is hoping to win the District 1 county commissioner's post.

In announcing her candidacy last month prior to the filing deadline she noted that "my family has lived, worked and raised our families in Mountain Home since 1898. I am the fifth generation in the seventh generation line.

"Elmore County has provided a secure and safe locality in which to raise our children," she said. "I would like to contribute in keeping this county a safe and productive place for generations to come."

She noted that she has "worked in various jobs -- ranching on the Prairie and Mountain Home, serving in the hot lunch program in School District #193; directing traffic in road construction; working with at-risk youths under Parks and Recreation; and currently is the program coordinator at a local treatment center for juveniles."

Her community involvement includes membership in the Idaho Juvenile Justices Association and the American Red Cross Association.

"Given the opportunity to be a part of this county's economic development would be a challenge," she said. "Demands on our schools, safe water, roads, EMS and police force are all important issues to be considered. I would like to accept this challenge as your District 1 commissioner.

"I believe that communication is an important key to good maintenance and successful development of Elmore County. You, as a resident, should be informed of all issues, goals and budgets that affect this county and have the opportunity to express concerns. I hope to be that voice of information."

She went on the pledge that "as commissioner District 1, I would serve you with integrity. I would inform you of county issues. I would listen to your concerns.

"Let's provide progress in Elmore County working together, a neighbor with a neighbor."

She also urged all citizens to "take the time to vote" during the May 27 primary election.

  • I know and have worked with this lady in the past. I haven't seen her in quite a while but just want you to all know that she is as honest as they come. She is also a great listener.

  • What will you Ms. Langfitt, be doing to protect Mountain Home AFB and keeping encroachment and development from negatively impacting it? The base puts an estimated $980,000,000.00 into the southern Idaho economy. How do you intend to protect that? Or will you be similar to a current County Commissioner and not care about the base because it's not in Glenns Ferry?

  • Cool Running,

As in my announcement, I have lived here for some time. Myself and both of my parents worked on the AFB for years as do a lot of civilians. I do know that in times when the AFB was subject to being closed. Mountain Home was devastated we as a county have relied on the AFB to help keep our community alive. As with anything as a commissioner I would like to look at all the information and see what would be the best solution for both the AFB and community.

I would like to thank you for the opportunity to look into the concerns and issues of our citizens.

midea : Thank you for your support Janet Langfitt for County Commissioner

  • Janet:

Voters in this town are wanting officials to be honest with them and want to hear: "what, when, where, why and how". Voters are wanting to be "informed and involved" and I think these blogs are a very good way to let voters know how you stand on certain issues since many people read them. It is is a great way for the people of Mtn. Home to get informed.

I truly believe that the people are expecting HONESTY with them now - and I believe YOU are the person to turn the tide and start new beginnings and a cohesiveness in Mtn. Home.

Your statement: "Demands on our schools, safe water, roads, EMS and police force are all important issues to be considered."

Could you elaborate as to why you feel these are important issues and in what way/s do you feel that you can contribute to the issues you stated?

This next question is going to come to you eventually - so I may as well ask you straight from the chute. Would you be willing to partner with the voters/groups in Mtn Home and be willing to have an ACT group here? (Read the Banter Box for a real good run-down on what Kuna has done. That blog from "froggie" is very long - but has an abundance of info in it). When you read the article/s you will also be able to feel the peoples views, as far as officials in this town go, and what type of changes we are wanting to see.

I am happy to see that you aren't afraid to use this forum to answer questions. Great Job Janet.

I believe you can step up to the plate and cooperate with the people/voters to try and give them want they want, and still be "firm, fair and consistant" in your decisions. I know you want to win this election - but, I also know you wouldn't let it cloud your honesty with the voters. Keep us informed.

  • Ms. Langfitt aka "Smilin":

What is your position regarding dairies/CAFOs and other industry that pollutes and uses a lot of water?

What is your position regarding all of this building that is going on when the city wells and sewers cannot keep up with demand/need without being improved?

How is it that land zoned "Ag" is being developed into homes and business? When do we decide that some of this development is not in the best interests of this community? Why is a dog kennel or another business allowed to be "put in" where houses are? Do I need to listen to dogs barking all night from inside my home? P & Z approves most anything EVEN IF we, as property owners, fight it. Why is another property owners rights put over mine?

What is your feeling about a nuclear power plant in our county that will be close to the Snake River, etc.?

What is your plan for OUR future?

Thank you very much for your time.

Gotta give her time to breath - give her a chance to answer the first questions. She's NOT the normal run of the mill politician who doesn't give a hoot about what her constituants think. Trust me..

She's regular people like you and I. A d--ng hard worker. There's no way I could keep up with her. She cares - just give her a chance.

The following quote from the article is exactly what we have said we want from the district. Ms. Lanngfitt said:

"I believe that communication is an important key to good maintenance and successful development of Elmore County. You, as a resident, should be informed of all issues, goals and budgets that affect this county and have the opportunity to express concerns. I hope to be that voice of information."

She went on the pledge that "as commissioner District 1, I would serve you with integrity. I would inform you of county issues. I would listen to your concerns.

"Let's provide progress in Elmore County working together, a neighbor with a neighbor."

After I read the article I had to comment. I like her style. This is exactly what we have asked the district to do. Be open, informative, to be a listener, and to work as neighbor to neighbor. Maybe she is the person who needs to be voted in. It has to start somewhere. I believe she is a strong enough candidate to make changes. If you could sit down and talk with her - you would see what I mean. I haven't seen her in a couple of years - but, she is all that I have said she is.

  • I trust that she will probably be very good based on what you have said but...over development is what got us into this mess and I would like to know that someone is going to "take care" of Mountain Home and not sell all of us out. That is what has gone on in the past (recent past). Something needs to change and she would be a good start to change things.
