Kindergarten Readiness Fair slated at elementaries April 22

Wednesday, April 9, 2008

The Mountain Home School District's annual Kindergarten Readiness Fair and school pre-registration for all incoming kindergarten students will be held at each elementary school in the district April 22 from 5-7 p.m.

Parents should go to the school their child will attend.

They should bring their child's, who must be five years old on or before Sept. 1, 2008, a certified birth certificate (original), or a passport for the child, and the child's shot record. That will greatly speed the fall registration process.

The readiness fair will help parents learn what kindergarten students are expected to know when they enter school. Among the skills they should have by the time they begin classes are the ability to:

* Identify capital letters (random order).

* Count to ten.

* Write their first name in block letters.

* Sing the alphabet.

* Identify the eight basic colors (red, orange, yellow, blue, green, purple, brown, black) and four standard shapes (circle, square, triangle, rectangle).

* Understand syllables.

* Detect rhymes ("hat, cat"- Do these rhyme?).

* Zip zippers and tie shoes.

Parents are encouraged to make some fun games to practice those skills and will be able to take home from the readiness fair "lots of items and information. "
