Col. Laffey addresses public workshop

Tuesday, March 25, 2008

Col Laffey, the Mission Support Group Commander, is the guest speaker at Wednesday's MAC meeting. Colonel Laffey's presentation is the Wings response at a public workshop to Elmore Counties Proposed Zoning and Development Ordinance. He will provide a great review of the Wings requirements and needs for their base and the airspace surrounding the base. The importance of protecting that airspace from encroachment and the public from the hazards involved with military operations. It will help everyone clearly understand what encroachment is and how it can slowly have a tremendous negative impact to operations. History has shown it can result in the eventual loss of the base. This should be seen by every citizen and especially every MAC member to under stand the impact of encroachment and the need to protect our great asset, Mountain Home Air Force base.

  • I'm sorry, I don't think I know what MAC is. At what time tomorrow is that meeting? It sounds important. Oh--Military Affairs Committee, right? Will it be held at the Zoning office at the courthouse?

  • Thanks, Karen. So it's not probably a public meeting today.

  • The MAC is the short name for the Military Affairs Committee of the Mountain Home Chamber of Commerce. In April 1980 the Mountain Home Chamber of Commerce established the Military Affairs Committee. The objectives of the committee as stated in an April resolution was to establish a committee to "brief" or acquaint incoming military personnel with significant and meaningful information about the community; establish a welcoming committee; to establish legislative committee to "Lobby" in Washington DC and to assist the base in carrying out social responsibilities. By 1981 the committee had grown to 37 members and to date it has grown to approximately 100 members and still carries on its mission as shown below.

As defined in the constitution: "The purpose of this organization shall be to promote the expansion, development and effectiveness of Mountain Home Air Fore Base and any other military activity within the state of Idaho" the committee wishes to support.

The Military Affairs Committee is composed of businesses and individual members of the Mountain Home Chamber of Commerce who desires to promote the purpose as defined above through both social and Political Action Committee endeavors.

This is not an "elite" group, just a group of individual who are concerned about insuring the future of Mountain Home AFB and other military activities within the State of Idaho and the well being of those who serve at Mountain Home AFB. Membership is open to any person by joining the Mountain Home Chamber of Commerce and then joins the MAC.

This group annually lobbies senior military members and our elected officials in Washington DC on behalf of the base and its military members.

For more information about the MAC interested persons can contact the Mountain Home Chamber of Commerce office by calling 587-4334 or visiting them at 205 North 3rd East.

    Best wishes,

  • Thanks for more info about MAC. Are meetings held at the chamber offices?

  • Thank you for your interest Senior Lady.

The MAC board meets at the Chamber office on the 3rd Wednesday of each month.

The general meeting of the MAC is held on the 4th Wednesday of each month at Carlos's Mexican Restaurant. Information is shared about Mountain Home AFB's activities which includes the recent exercise to deployments, to the bed down of the Royal Singapore Air Force unit to other activities such as the upcoming main gate closure. Speakers are normally military members, and it is time well spent to come and listen to them.

For more information anyone is welcome to contact the Chamber office at 587-4334 or by visiting the office located at 205 North 3rd East.

    Best wishes,
