Jazz pianist and MHHS grad Andy Nevala to perform April 1

The Mountain Home Arts Council will present Andy Nevala in concert on Tuesday, April 1, at Mountain Home High School's Lloyd Schiller Gymnasium.

A renowned jazz musician, Nevala is a 1990 graduate of Mountain Home High School.

His band will perform at MHHS in route to an invitational performance at the Gene Harris Jazz Festival in Boise.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the show starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are $9 for adults and $7 for students and senior citizens.

Nevala also will conduct a clinic with the high school in the morning of April 1 and another clinic with the junior high in the afternoon. Both the junior high and the senior high bands will be performing a few songs with him during the evening concert.

Proceeds from the local concert will be donated to the school district's marching band, jazz band and various band performances.

The Andy Nevala Latin Jazz Ensemble is one of the featured acts at the 2008 Gene Harris Jazz Festival in Boise. It has also performed live on KUVO on several occasions, sells out Dazzle (Denver) when it performs there, and features Kim Stone on bass (formerly of Spyro Gyra, currently touring with The Rippingtons), Mike Marlier on drums (currently with Nelson Rangel), Victor Nieves on congas (born in New York, rasied in Puerto Rico, performed with Tony Vega, Lalo Rodriguez, and Roberto Santarosa), Darren Kramer on trombone (toured with Tom Jones, Matchbox 20, and his own group DKO), Jeff Nathonson on saxaphone (currently touring with Louis Miguel), and Tim Libby on trumpet (performed with Peter Erskine, Tommy Dorsey, Bob Florence, and Jiggs Whigam).

The event is sponsored by the Mountain Home Arts Council, Idaho Commission on the Arts, National Endowment for the Arts, select Mountain Home businesses, and contributions from local citizens.
