Tiger tennis team drops opener to Kuna

The Mountain Home Tiger tennis team dropped their season opening tennis match at Kuna last Monday. The boys lost to Kuna, 2-5, while the girls lost 0-7.

Mountain Home Tiger tennis coach Tamzy House noted the scoring system for team scoring is different this year. "In the past, the dual match between schools consisted of 12 matches -- three singles boys and girls, two doubles boys and girls, and two mixed doubles. The score was a unified score based on the number of matches won/loss out of the 12.

"This year, since the state tournament will be awarding trophies to separate girls and boys teams, District III will be trying out a new scoring format to match the state format. The new format still has the same 12 matches being played, where each match is worth one point towards the team score, however, this year the number of match points won-lost will be added separately for the boys and girls singles and doubles matches. The win-loss of the two mixed doubles will be applied to the team scores of both the boys and girls team.

"Thus, if the mixed doubles lose, then zero points are awarded. The result is that the maximum score for the boys or girls team will be seven points -- three singles, two doubles, two mixed doubles.

MHHS advocated this scoring change for District III and it has been well received by the 4A and 5A coaches and athletic directors."

The two Mountain Home wins against the Kuna boys came in the #1 boys singles and doubles. Ricky Guadaramma won the #1 singles match, 6-4, 6-1, and the 2007 state qualifying team of Jordan Niksich and Keth Galloway won the # 1 boys doubles match, 7-5, 6-2.

Chris Oswald lost the #2 boys singles, 0-6, 0-6, while Joey Smith lost the #3 singles match, 0-6, 2-6. Collin Smith and Jared Mott lost the #2 boys doubles, 2-6, 2-6. In mixed doubles #1, Gabriel Stephens and Lindsey Kellerman lost 0-6, 0-6, and #2 mixed doubles team of Andrew Martin and Carina Sauter lost, 3-6, 2-6.

In girls play, #1 singles Casey Stephens lost 0-6, 1-6, Jessica Lewis lost the #2 singles, 0-6, 2-6, and Lauren Borgholthaus lost #3 singles, 1-6, 2-6. Carolyn Bailey and Danielle Gorman lost a hard-fought 4-6, 2-6 #1 doubles match, while Brittany Crownhart and Caitlyn Smith lost the #2 doubles match, 0-6, 1-6.

"I was very pleased with the effort of our players, especially the new ones who jumped in to fill out the varsity line-up," said Coach House. "They got some great experience and will progressively get better. Our focus for the next few weeks will be to continue polishing stroke and serve fundamentals and develop better point combination tactics."
