American Legion to be torn up

Wednesday, March 5, 2008

The Idaho Department of Transportation has let bids for a project to rebuild American Legion Boulevard this summer.

The rebuilding project will go from N. 14th East Street to N. 2nd East Street. The project is scheduled to start on May 27 and last for about five weeks.

Bids will be opened on March 18. The projected cost is $1 million.

During the project, one lane will be open for vehicles, with flaggers directing traffic through the construction area.

As part of the project sidewalk ramps will be improved to meet Americans with Disabilities Act guidelines. The ramps will be more sloped and wider than the older sidewalk ramps.

  • Before the church on 18th opens...do you think that we could get a light at 18th and American Legion? That turn lane in the middle is nice BUT that was a temporary solution to a problem that has been around for years. If that church goes in and there is no light at 18th, people will spend 20 minutes attempting to turn left onto American Legion. Did anyone consider this prior to approval for the church?

  • Congradulations to the City of Mountain Home on renewal of the American Legion roadway. As the main entrance point to our city, it will help with initial impressions of those coming to our fair city.

The same goes for the building of the new Nazarene Church on 18th. That Church, in its paper work for approval to build on that site, has continually communicated that its building(s) and grounds will be available for community use.

Mountain Home is changing for the better. We have come a long way and the future looks bright.

  • Two churches -- Mtn Home Nazarene, with the proposal to allow community use, as well as Our Lady of Good Counsel -- are building new facilities; but I can't remember which is going in where. One is near the high school I think, the other across Hyway 30 I think. Which is which? (I'm sorry, my memory is really going.)

Will both impact 18th and American Legion? I really think a signal at that intersection is a good idea anyway, especially with that new apartment complex going in next to the funeral home on 18th.

  • Yes...how about a light at 18th and American Legion. There was yet another accident there on Monday, March 10. Pieces of the vehicles involved were still on the ground this morning. What is it going to take to get a light?

Growth they say is good but there also should be progress. If we cannot get into town safely and easily then we are probably making/keeping a list and going to Boise on our way to and from work, etc.

  • Did it start early? There is a very serious lack of flow near the Auto Ranch and I-84?

The first point that needs covered is that the City of Mountain Home is not the one overseeing this project. This road is a state maintained roadway which means the Idaho Department of Transportation is the one that takes care of it. This does not mean that the City does some maintenance on the roadway but they only do so to aid ITD.

As for the traffic light, I agree that there might, and I say MIGHT need to be a light there but there are other intersections that has far more traffic and pose more of a traffic hazard. In a recent poll by Mt Home News, the readers overwhelming spoke by saying that Airbase and Hwy 51 needed a light far more than 18th and American Legion. Not only is the volume of traffic more, there have been several deaths at this intersection.
