Congress should act now

Wednesday, January 30, 2008

We wholeheartedly endorse President Bush's call in Monday's State of the Union Address for Congress to act quickly on his economic stimulus plan.

While the Democrats are right, it doesn't go far enough, it will help, and we can't see any reason that Congress shouldn't give us some of our hard-earned money back. Quickly.

A more comprehensive package, designed to address some of the fundamental problems of the economy, is certainly needed, but those things take time to analyze. The Bush quick fix, however, also is needed. Middle and lower-middle class Americans can use the money -- if for no other reason that to pay for the higher costs of gas and food. It won't halt a recession, but it may delay it long enough for a more substantial fix to be developed and take hold.

Congress should pass this measure now, and then, without stopping, move on to the more complex solutions we need.
