Last second shot dooms Lady Tigers v. Hawks

Wednesday, December 19, 2007

A three-pointer by Skyview's Jeni Clark with 14 seconds left overshadowed a gallant comeback by the Mountain Home Lady Tigers Thursday night as the Lady Hawks left Lloyd Schiller Gymnasium with a 47-46 conference win.

Mountain Home fell behind early, 4-0, but battled back to take an 8-4 lead and led 8-6 after a quarter.

The Lady Tigers shot out to a 16-8 lead three minutes into the second quarter but Skyview came back on a 15-2 run to take a 23-18 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Mountain Home fell behind by 10 in the third period and trailed, 36-28 after three.

A 10-2 run by Mountain Home midway through the fourth quarter tied the game at 38.

Nikki Rudder's basket put the Lady Hawks up 40-38 but two free throws by Brandie Riggs tied it back up at 40 and Emily Moranda made one of two free throws to put the Lady Tigers up 41-40 with 3:30 left.

Jeni Clark's basket put Skyview ahead 42-41 but Mountain Home regained the lead on a trey by Francesca Hale, 44-42, with 1:30 left.

Jeni Clark scored to tie the game at 44, but Francesca Hale stole the ball and scored on a lay-up to put Mountain Home up 46-44 with 26 seconds left.

Jeni Clark, who led all scorers with 20 points, hit her fourth trey of the night with 14 seconds left to put the Lady Hawks up 47-46.

Mountain Home called a time out with 12.7 seconds left, and brought the ball down for a shot, but could not get the shot off and Skyview escaped with a 47-46 win.

"That was definitely a battle -- a tough one to lose," said Mountain Home Lady Tiger basketball coach Brent Keener after the game. "We're definitely getting there, and we talked about it before the game if we take care of the ball. We just absolutely panic if there's any double-team. We think we have to get rid of the ball right then. But we're improving. The girls fought back, and hopefully we'll keep improving."

Francesca Hale led Mountain Home with 12 points -- 10 of them in the fourth quarter. Brandie Riggs and Chantell Crane both added eight points, Emily Moranda and Shelby Posey each had seven, and Angie Rios had four points.

The loss dropped the Lady Tigers to 5-5 on the season, and 3-2 in conference play. The Lady Tigers closed out their December schedule last night at home against Emmett in conference action.

They open the new year on Jan. 3 at Middleton.
