For the fourth time in the past five years, the 2007 Mountain Home High School yearbook, The Prophet, garnered the highest award at the state journalism conference, earning Best of Show.

The yearbook is judged for its quality of writing, design, theme development, photography, and adherence to journalism style.

"I was thrilled that the book won first place. There were a lot of great yearbooks in the competition, so it was an honor for the Mountain Home students to win," said adviser Susan Martin.

The 2007 yearbook editor was Amber Wright.

Fifteen journalism students also brought home individual awards. Chris Vogl received a superior medal for do-ahead photography, and Daniel Katsules received a superior medal for sports writing.

Second-place awards went to Christina Anthony for do-ahead yearbook feature writing, Liz Griffeath and Zack Anderson for do-ahead photography, Chelsea Bacon for newswriting, Summer Allison for feature writing, Josh Tarbox for advertising design, and Kyle Knight for on-the-spot photography.

Receiving third-place awards were Kylie Ray for editorial writing, Arrianna Montgomery for on-the-spot photography, Chris Aiken for yearbook copy writing, and Laura Cumber for review writing.

Shelby Roberts, Daniella Stratton, and Bridget Sinerius earned proficiency honors for their work on yearbook layouts.

The keynote speaker at the conference was young adult author, Chris Crutcher, who grew up in Cascade.

Students also attended workshops in photography, broadcasting, writing, and design techniques.

"The hardest part for me was trying to find out what I wanted to photograph, and then trying to set it up," said Arrianna Montgomery, who competed in on-the-spot photography.

  • This is super - four years in a row. Sue Martin must work so well with the students as advisor. Each student, I am sure, were motivated and did superb work in each category. Nice to see students put forth the effort and compete so well.
